“We have made fabulous bird feeders and hedgehog houses out of recycled materials.”
Claire Hampson
To be honest there is nothing better than taking them on a litter pick then afterwards exploring how long the articles that they have collected take to break down. 450 years for each plastic bottle is always met with incredulity! Make their learning real in a place that affects them – this has much greater impact. In my spare time, I organise a community litter picking group (The Wombles of Hambleton) and the little ones who join us are usually fully on board with environmental issues.”

“A few years ago we had some gardeners come in and help plant trees including fruit trees with the children and talk about the natural environment. Each year we take the children in EYFS to pick the fruit. We make delicious plum jam. We also have a wonderful vegetable patch which we grow from off cuts and seeds. Not only does it encourage them to eat healthy, they gain a better understanding of reusing fruit/veg and learn the growth cycle of this.”
Mei Slater
“Our whole English topic was based around the book ‘10 ways to help my world’. The children’s favourite activity was making bird feeders using leftover cake crumbs from lunch combined with squished fruit left from snack and lard.”
Jordan Louise
“We have been looking at food miles and the importance of making ethically informed decisions. The pupils have then used this information to decide which fruit/vegetables to stock in their healthy snack shop. They are determined to lower the carbon footprint!”
James Wheeler
“Junk modelling! The children love it because they get to go wild – they are then learning to reuse and up–cycle!”
Dan James
“We have some super projects throughout school. Year 2 look at plastic in the oceans. Create life size whales out of plastic and write letters. Year 4 look at the recycled orchestra of Paraguay and make their own recycled instruments. They also make their own filters to clean water. Year three grow their own plants and have a bee keeper explain the importance of bees. Amazing stuff!”
Tracey McLannahan
“Get them to compare photographs of glaciers to observe how Alaskan glaciers have changed over the last century.”
