DESIGN IN MENTAL HEALTH 2024 EVENT PREVIEW

Lienelle Geldenhuys of White Arkitekter and Joanna Carr of Cambridge Children’s Hospital. Samantha Robinson from Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust will present ‘Engaging the Vision for the New Warneford Park, Oxford’. A product development example will come from Darwin Group’s Louis Sullivan, whose presentation, ‘The Bedroom Evolved’, will discuss the thought, theory, and lessons learnt from the company’s collaborative project to further mental health spaces. Fulfilling duty of care in the safe

provision of basic amenities is covered in a number of presentations, including ‘Breathing Life into Bedlam – How Improved Ventilation Can be Achieved Within Mental Health Facilities’ by Andrew Carnegie of Air Sentry. On the subject of water, Paul Colebrook of Borg & Overstrom will present on ‘Safe and Hygienic Access to Drinking Water as a Vital Element in our Duty of Care’, while Chris Knight of Hydrop E.C.S. will discuss ‘The Limitations of HTM 04-01 in Mental Health Built Environments’.

Four further workshops In addition to the co-production and sketch workshops already mentioned, there are four other workshops available for conference delegates to book on to. Informed Choices is a global testing method for all products used in mental health, created by a partnership of DiMHN and Building Research Establishment (BRE), and launched at Design in Mental Health 2023. At this year’s conference, DiMHN’s Hannah Chamberlain and David Willmott from Cygnet will facilitate a workshop on the standard, and specifically how to choose the right safety level of product for different service-user groups. Andrea Harman, Concept developer

at Saint-Gobain Ecophon, will lead a workshop helping participants experience the world from the perspective of an older person, and one living with dementia. Participants will use aids including a gerontology ageing suit to explore how we experience and navigate buildings and complete tasks when our body and mind are receiving and processing information differently from in our younger years. Rhian Davidson of Altro, and Maria

Luigia Assirelli of Floyd Slaski Architects, will run a workshop entitled ‘Design for All’, which will help participants consider design from a different sensorial perspective. The workshop will explore how to apply neurodiverse-friendly design principles to different settings, such as hospitals, residential units, schools, and higher education. With autism, dementia, and hidden disabilities in mind, participants will create a colourful and meaningful mood board based on neurodiversity-friendly design principles. In today’s world, assistive equipment is

often associated solely with functionality and healthcare, but Bruno Oro, Assistant Professor of Industrial Design at Iowa State University, wants to challenge this paradigm. He will facilitate a workshop

entitled ‘Redefining Assistive Equipment as Personalised Empowerment Tools’, where participants will gain practical skills in empathetic design thinking and user engagement strategies. Through undertaking hands-on exercises and group activities to apply workshop concepts and develop innovative ideas, participants will leave the workshop with a fresh perspective on design’s potential to improve mental health.

The exhibition The 2024 DiMH Exhibition will feature over 60 leading companies and organisations, including many NHS-approved framework suppliers. Visitors will find suppliers of furniture, doorsets, windows, flooring, modular building facilities, sensory equipment, staff safety alarms, and security systems, as well as consultancy services, architects, and heating and washroom solution specialists. Exhibition highlights this year include:

l 11 companies make their debut at the event: Air Purity; Cranium Medical Products; Danfloor; Designplan Lighting; Medstrom; Metador; Mulberry Contracts; PKBL; Skipper Furniture; Third Millenium Systems, and Willmott Dixon.

l Medstrom will showcase its latest innovation, the SoloMH bed, reportedly featuring ‘superior ligature risk reduction and safety’.

l Experts from Willmott Dixon will be available to discuss a recent programme of five refurbishments for Coventry & Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust at its St Michael’s Hospital, involving upgrading existing anti-ligature fixtures and fittings to provide a safe environment for patients.

l Mulberry Contract Furniture will present the Prodigy range, said to be the UK’s first rota-moulded bedroom furniture range.

l Visitors from NHS Trusts are invited to visit the Medical Architecture stand, where the team is keen to hear about the challenges Trusts are

facing in providing capacity for mental health services against the backdrop of competing demands for capital investment.

Attending the exhibition is free of charge. Exhibition Visitor places can be booked at www.designinmentalhealth. com. The following pages (pages 49-54) include information from a number of exhibitors on what they will be showing in Manchester.

The 2024 DiMH Awards The prestigious Design in Mental Health Awards take place at Manchester Central on Tuesday 4 June, with the awards due to be presented in 13 categories following a record number of entries. All delegates and visitors to Design in Mental Health are invited to attend the ceremony at no extra cost. Proceedings get underway at 5 pm with a complimentary drinks reception and entertainment before the awards winners are announced. Categories include Art Installation of

the Year, Clinical Team of the Year, four Project of the Year categories, and the always hotly-contested Product Innovation of the Year. Shortlists for all categories can be found on the event website. Hannah Chamberlain said: “Please

come and visit the Design In Mental Health Network’s stand, where the theme this year is ‘Connect, Inspire, Be Inspired’. Visitors will be encouraged to contribute their thoughts and comments to the central proposition that Good Design and Human Value are intrinsically connected. An interactive stand is planned, with opportunities to contribute via art, Mentimeter polls, written response and even video. On Day two of the conference, leading mental health artist and key note speaker, Dolly Sen, will be leading an art workshop with Hospital Rooms, ‘How should art in hospital make me feel?’ Registration for the workshop will be posted online, and is extremely limited – watch out for your opportunity to join!”
