COVER PICTURE: The ‘pioneering’ modular mental health bedroom built by healthcare construction firm, Darwin Group, returns to the annual Design in Mental Health event next month for a second year. Hailed as ‘a best-in- class solution’ at last year’s annual DiMHN conference and exhibition, the Bedroom Evolved has since had several improvements made – including to furniture, lighting, flooring, and colour palette changes.
Journal of the Design in Mental Health Network
This is the most exciting time of year for us at DiMHN – the start of the conference season. We’re delighted always to get together with our community – together we are stronger. This year, after the ‘100 conversations’ initiative, and getting out there to meet members countrywide, our Board met to consider the impact we want through all our activities. It’s all about an inspired, enabled community, with the tools to influence and make change for the benefit of mental health service-users and frontline staff. That’s why, at the Network’s heart, there will always be a passionate belief in the power of knowledge exchange. It’s also why I can’t wait to see you at Manchester Central in June. There’s another reason for excitement
at this time of year – it’s our annual printed edition, so as well as having a virtual copy, you can turn the covers of a printed magazine, with features from the community, updates on the Informed Choices initiative (pages 24-25), and special features to accompany our ninth Design with People in Mind edition – on the power of art in mental health settings (see page 7). We’re really looking forward to the conference keynote by renowned mental health artist and campaigner, Dolly Sen, an old colleague of mine from the early 2000s. I caught up with her recently to discover how her art has taken her on a journey in mental health activism, and where she thinks the movement should go next (see pages 11-13).

THE NETWORK | MAY 2024
The call for co-production in the mental health built environment has never been stronger – nor the benefits more obvious. When building for people traditionally excluded from design consultations, we must be even more scrupulous in our self- examination of unintended boundaries to access and voice. That is why I’m so pleased that our two other conference keynotes are Andy Bell, from Centre for Mental Health, and Councillor Jacqui Dyer, presenting on the Race Equality Framework. Both have important messages on the importance of inclusion. With that in mind, I’ll be presenting at conference the results of the ‘100 conversations’, how we synthesised these into a clarion call, and how I hope to make that call have impact and a ripple effect through all our activities. The call is: ‘Good Design, Human Value’.
Let’s make that link throughout all our work, connect across our disciplines, and help unlock the human value unrealised in the current mental health system. Whenever you came into this work, let’s not forget what motivated us originally – the passion to make change. Looking forward to some great connections in June.
