Infection prevention
institutions facing growing pressure to adopt more environmentally responsible practices, this conference will address strategies for reducing the carbon footprint of decontamination processes while maintaining the highest infection control standards. Experts will discuss the persistent risks posed by biofilm contamination in endoscope decontamination, the ongoing debate over transitioning from high-level disinfection to full sterilisation of endoscopes, and the latest research on protein residue removal from reusable medical devices. NHS procurement specialists will also lead a panel debate on the challenges of loan sets, track and trace, and the future of medical device management. Other hot topics include:
The seven deadly sins of endoscope decontamination: John Prendergast, Principal Decontamination Engineer, NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership. This session will look at the risks and
challenges we face reprocessing re-usable flexible endoscopes within healthcare. Should we accept disinfection, or should we be migrating to sterilisation of endoscopes? Where are the risks and are we doing all that we can to ensure a safe endoscope for the next patient? Biofilm risk for flexible endoscope decontamination: Rob Warburton, Group Decontamination Lead, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust This will cover:
l The current process assurance tests for endoscope decontamination.
l What is a biofilm? l The potential of biofilm accumulation and associated challenges this could pose.
l Discussion on whether flexible endoscopes should be categorised by risk factor with additional process steps.
Protein residue removal research project: Mark Campbell, Head of Decontamination,
Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. This session will provide a brief overview
of the work undertaken in Cardiff and Vale University Health Board to combat residual proteins on processed reusable medical devices since the re-write of WHTM 01-01 Part A / HTM 01-01 Part A. The presentation will cover risks associated with residual proteins, optimisation of the medical device decontamination life cycle and quantifiable data to prove results.
Exhibition An exhibition of infection prevention and decontamination solutions will also take place alongside the conference programme. A preview of the companies, solutions and innovations that can be viewed at the event is included at the end of this article.
