TRACK & TRACE

system that could streamline its infection prevention systems, which synchronised across departments; it opted for an integrated platform due to its compatibility with electronic equipment, such as disinfection machines and endoscope washers, and third-party technology, such as the radio-frequency identification (RFID) tracked equipment NHS Lothian uses. Vitally, it can integrate with patient EHRs: this means the patient journey can be tracked from admission to discharge, which isn’t possible with physical, paper- based systems. This system can feed into a centralised hospital information system, meaning track and trace records can be easily accessed between departments and a patient’s medical history can also be quickly pulled up if needed.

Supporting digitally-enabled care Even during a time when the pandemic has placed great strain on the health service, we’re on the precipice of incredible change in how the NHS delivers healthcare. In the Long Term Plan, the NHS noted

that ‘virtually every aspect of modern life has been, and will continue to be, radically reshaped by innovation and technology’.9 As it pushes forward with these aims, the world of hospital administration, care and infection prevention could change radically.
