Supporting effective reprocessing with Scarborough Hospital The 500th machine in the UK was put in place at Scarborough Hospital in March, as the hospital looked to update its endoscopy decontamination systems. Scarborough Hospital is part of York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which had run Cantel’s ISIS AERs for many years across its York Hospital, Scarborough Hospital and Bridlington Hospital endoscopy units.
The Trust recently streamlined its endoscopy services across Bridlington and Scarborough into a new Decontamination Unit based within the latter’s Sterile Services Department. As part of the refreshed service, the Trust made the decision to upgrade their reprocessing equipment, wanting to install the most advanced machinery. Having worked closely with Cantel in the past, the Trust opted for the RAPIDAER Reprocessor at the Scarborough unit. Six new machines were installed at the hospital, alongside two new SURESTORETM

Transport Systems and a CHEMSTORE chemical storage cabinet from Cantel. Seeing the smooth launch at Scarborough, York Hospital is now upgrading its endoscopy decontamination services with a suite of seven new RAPIDAER Reprocessors. Glenn Johnson is the deputy decontamination manager based at Scarborough Hospital, who was heavily involved in the roll-out of the streamlined service and equipment upgrade. He shared: “The Trust has been supported by Cantel for a number of years, and when it came time to rethink our endoscopy services across Scarborough and Bridlington, it was important that we worked with a trusted partner to update our decontamination systems. “Demand for endoscopy services is generally on the rise, notwithstanding the pause in services in the early days of the pandemic. When we made the move to a single decontamination unit between Scarborough and Bridlington, which was intended to support scope reprocessing for two hospitals, we needed equipment that could support this capacity reliably and efficiently. It was a natural choice to turn to Cantel for support given the service and advice the team has provided over the years. The roll-out has been seamless, and it’s an honour to mark the 500th milestone in the UK with the company.” Thomas Brownlow, regional account manager at Cantel, worked closely with Scarborough Hospital on the installation: “Given our relationship with York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has gone back over twenty years, it’s fitting that Scarborough Hospital is now home to the 500th RAPIDAER Reprocessor in the UK, and it was brilliant to safely celebrate the installation earlier this year. “Sharing decontamination services across multiple sites means scope reprocessing needs to be quick, efficient, and above all
else, safe. With this in mind, we needed to ensure the Trust’s endoscopy teams could access the latest in reprocessing technology, to help them improve service reliability, workflow and scope distribution. RAPIDAER Reprocessor was clearly the best fit for the Trust’s needs at its Scarborough and York sites. It’s been a real pleasure to help bring the project to life.”
