A snapshot survey of CSJ readers recently found that sterile services departments have had to adapt to significant changes during the COVID pandemic. However, staff overwhelmingly reported feeling a “sense of pride” at how their departments have risen to the challenges. Readers commented on how they had pulled together to work as teams, supporting each other and helping colleagues in other areas of the hospital with the COVID effort. “Teamwork has never been so good,” commented one respondent. Feedback from survey participants revealed how staff have shown resilience as they were redeployed to other areas; they

reported that staff had shown a “willingness to adapt to the changes”, helping out any other department in need. Staff said they felt like they had “made a difference” and many reported positively on how their Trust had communicated with them during these difficult times. For many (over 56%), the main impact of COVID-19 on the department has been a decrease in output, as theatre and endoscopy activity decreased. However, during the second wave, some respondents described how proud they were that their departments were able to sustain good throughput levels under extremely challenging circumstances.
