Matt Whitty
Chief Executive of the Accelerated Access Collaborative and Director of Innovation, Research and Life Sciences, NHS England
I lead the Accelerated Access Collaborative (AAC), a collaboration committed to getting the best new innovations to patents faster. We set national strategic priorities and co-ordinate work to support the UK to be the best place in the world to discover, develop, test, trial, launch and adopt new treatments and technologies. The fantastic UK MedTech companies here at
MEDICA are a testament to the UK’s position as a hotbed of innovative MedTech and it’s clear to see why. The UK has world renowned universities,
life science parks and advanced manufacturing capabilities. It has world leading expertise in some of the key growth MedTech sectors including genomics, AI, and digital. All this is built upon nationally co-ordinated research through the National Institute for Health Research and universally recognised bodies in NICE and the MHRA. Collectively creating an ecosystem for innovation that we then help support to connect with the NHS, the largest single payer system in the world with an innovative clinical workforce. The AAC works across industry and the
NHS. Both supporting the NHS to be ready for implementation of the most promising tech that our industry partners help to identify and supporting industry with their early-stage product development and evidence collection so that clinicians are supported to know what works, and
DUSSELDORF 2022
doesn’t work, for their patients. By bringing different parts of the innovation
ecosystem together we make it easier for those seeking to introduce an innovation into the NHS to know how to go about turning their ideas into viable business propositions. Our work is underpinned by a commitment to address health inequity and we fund regional innovation teams to support local systems to adopt the innovations that will make the biggest difference to all. Simultaneously our collaboration partners,
NICE and the MHRA, are expanding their work to support the introduction of MedTech while maintaining their position as world leaders in regulating and evaluating digital technologies and the UK Government has demonstrated its intent with national digital and data strategies, the clinical research implementation plan and the Life Sciences Vision all publishing within the last 12 months. Through our AAC programmes in 2021/22,
we have worked with over 2,800 innovators, supported over 3,000 innovations and secured nearly £450m of investment into the UK. The UK provides an ideal environment for all those seeking to deploy new technologies to support its 65 million patients. Conference hosts ABHI are a key partner in our
work so if you want to find out more about what we do and how we might be able to help speak to our ABHI colleagues. Have a great conference.
