CAMBRIDGE

Improving Lives by Increasing Global Health and Wealth

Cambridge Biomedical Campus is showing how science can help to tackle the burden of global disease as Cambridge brings together centres of excellence to meet and resolve the challenges facing us all.

The campus, which spans 170 acres and has a 20,000-strong workforce, is an important part of the UK’s acclaimed life sciences industry. The site, one of the world’s leading clusters of healthcare, research and related life science activity, has grown and developed considerably since its birth in 1967. Today, it is the largest employment site in

Cambridge, home to a number of organisations including: the University of Cambridge, Cambridge University Hospitals, Royal Papworth Hospital, Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust, the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, AstraZeneca and Abcam. The campus is part of a broader cohesive and

joined-up ecosystem stretching across the city to harness the benefits of academia, industry and the NHS working collaboratively. The mission is simple. Everyone is working

to improve lives by increasing global health and wealth, with the local population at the centre but the benefits of this endeavour spreading out across the region and nation. This means using the expertise in technology,

biology, healthcare and artificial intelligence to focus on prevention, early diagnosis of disease, tackling inequality and the challenges of ageing. There are specifics to highlight the benefits

of working together to make a difference. For example the recently opened new Heart and Lung Institute is bringing together the largest concentration of scientists and clinicians in heart and lung medicine in Europe. The building will see more

than 380 staff from the University of Cambridge and Royal Papworth housed under one roof, all working together to tackle some of the world’s major killers: cardiovascular diseases are estimated to cause nearly 18 million deaths per year, mostly due to heart attacks and stroke, with respiratory diseases such as pneumonia and lung cancer just behind. It is the space for collaboration which is key and

we see this all over Cambridge from campuses to public and private sector organisations working for the common good. By working so closely together, clinicians and

researchers from all sorts of disciplines are able to challenge each other, test ideas and ways of thinking like never before. These discoveries are vital to delivering the best healthcare and innovation possible, not simply for Cambridge or the Eastern region, but for the UK and beyond. Our mission is to ensure the benefits of great ideas are felt as wide as possible.
