OPERATING THEATRES ROUND-UP ‘Freedom for surgical excellence’
Brandon Medical says its latest Mediclean ultraclean ventilation system improves patient safety and surgical outcomes ‘by providing unique benefits’ to hospital designers, surgical staff, estates teams, and maintenance engineers. The company said: “Brandon
recommends complanate systems that fit completely flush to suspended ceilings without the need for air deflectors or side screens because they simplify positioning operating lights, pendants, and imaging equipment without obstruction or collision damage. With an air curtain, no side screens or Coanda air deflectors, and no protruding enclosure, our Mediclean
‘see’ when the air isn’t clean due to entrainment or surgical smoke, and take steps to protect themselves and their patients.”
complanate UCV system gives freedom for surgical excellence.”
Brandon added: “Our patented Continuous Particle Monitoring measures airborne particles in real-time, and uses simple visual alarms. Clinical staff can
Self-contained lay-up cabinet
Medical Air Technology (MAT) has developed ‘a unique self-contained lay-up cabinet’, which ‘provides an innovative solution to a difficult challenge’. It explained: “HTM 03-01 says ‘laying-up in the clean zone is preferable for infection control reasons’, but this is not always possible due to limited space. Requiring only 1.4 m of free wall space and
minimal installation time, MAT’s lay-up cabinet, designed for operating theatre ‘prep’ rooms, is the perfect solution when space is limited, but infection control essential.”
The fully self-contained cabinet requires only a 13 amp power supply. Medical
equipment placed under its diffuser is ‘bathed in uni- directional HEPA-filtered air’, which passes directly over the sterile instrument tray. It provides over 1,000 air changes per hour over the instruments, ‘more even than under a UCV canopy’, creating ‘a safe, sterile lay- up area’. The instrument tray can then be covered with a sterile cloth and taken from the prep room into the
operating theatre clean zone. MAT added: “The newest, most advanced version is available in three sizes, with an electronic control panel, adjustable fan speed, integral LED lighting, and a high quality powder- coated finish.”
Flush-to-ceiling ‘bespoke’ UCVs
Interfurn claims to offer ‘the only bespoke flush-to-ceiling ultraclean ventilation canopy designed to individual requirements offering a choice of high or low level recirculation’.
It said: “We can offer more floor to ceiling height in your theatre, and work around small ceiling void space and
obstructions above the false ceiling – so that even under lower ceiling heights, operating lights, pendants, and imaging equipment, can be used to their maximum potential. We don’t just offer traditional square canopy options either; instead we design the size and shape around the user’s requirements.” Interfurn offers CG screens, which it says ‘tests and studies have shown to offer improved performance, due to the ability to minimise air turbulence’. The company explained: “CG screens are translucent, and the theatre lights can be mounted above them, which allows more shadow free light directly over the surgical area. The light is dimmable, and can also be coloured, enable the introduction of green light into the surgical area, and alleviating eye strain.”
Mediclean Continuous Particle Monitoring automatically increases airflow ‘to quickly flush out airborne particles and surgical smoke as soon as they are detected’. Alarm thresholds can be set by the user, while data logging records the air quality during each procedure. Mediclean ‘can be configured for virtually any application’ – from hybrid theatres, to low ceiling spaces and side screen systems. The CE marked system uses triple filtered air.
Ceiling supply unit for ‘heavy duty’ applications
Dräger has announced a new addition to its ‘family’ of Movita ceiling supply units for operating theatres – the Movita Lift Strong support arm. The company says the new Movita Lift Strong allows anaesthetic workstations weighing up to 300 kg to be flexibly positioned clear of the floor. Product manager, Dirk Aschemann, said: “Many new medical devices are very heavy – not least because of the increasing complexity of anaesthesia workstations. Positioning and operating these devices in a flexible yet stable way is now possible with the new support arm. This is ensured by the built-in lift motor, which now features more power and a reinforced joint. Undesired spring-back is thus prevented when the arm is adjusted. “The Movita Lift Strong also offers the usual convenience of a ‘standard’ Movita, such as device docking points with electronic coupling monitoring, easy-to-clean surfaces, and sophisticated cable management for simplified hygiene.”
