Continuing advances in many types of surgery, a demand for surgical and diagnostic capabilities to be accommodated within the same theatre, and a growing requirement for ever more ‘connected’ theatres able to ‘stream’ live footage to other locations, are among the developments to have transformed operating theatre design in the past 5-10 years. In this issue (pages 53-59), a pioneer of ultraclean theatre ventilation canopies looks back at its history, and brings things up to date with a focus both on the wide range of theatre products it now sells – often as part of a fully integrated digital theatre – and its role as a turnkey theatre contractor. A medical technology specialist, meanwhile, considers the challenges of designing and equipping modern hybrid theatres (pages 49-51). With fire safety ever in the spotlight, with the conclusions of the Hackitt Review on the Grenfell Tower fire published in mid-May, and news of the evacuation of 53 cancer patients at the Bristol Haematology and Oncology Centre (BHOC) last month following a plant room fire, an article in this issue (pages 39-41) sees a leading cable management specialist highlight the importance of one of the key elements of healthcare fire safety – firestopping. on the second ‘half’ of March’s IHEEM Past- Presidents’ roundtable in London, where topics discussed included addressing continuing engineering skills gaps, whether PFI has been a ‘good or a bad thing’ for the healthcare estate, and how to encourage more female entrants into the profession. Interestingly, with succession planning a key focus, April saw senior estates and facilities staff from NHSI’s NHS Estates and Facilities Efficiency and Productivity Division lead the formulation of, and chair, a well-attended ‘Workforce Planning’ seminar in Birmingham (pages 25-28). There the NHSI representatives discussed a comprehensive Workforce Development Plan, key elements of which include taking steps to improve recruitment and retention, tackling skills gaps through appropriate training, setting up an NHS Apprenticeship Scheme, efficient cross-sector working, establishing a Career Route Map, and focusing on work culture and wellbeing. Representatives from over 30 NHS Trusts debated the key issues with senior personnel from the NHSI and professional institutes including IHEEM, HefmA, and IPEM.
