IHEEM PAST-PRESIDENTS’ ROUNDTABLE – PART TWO

Bolton had at the time was that one year there would be a consulting engineer as President, the next a hospital engineer, and then a manufacturer representative in the role. It was wonderful. I loved it.” JB: “What about your more recent involvement and experiences with IHEEM?” LT: “The marvellous thing is the annual exhibition in Manchester. It’s an important event for us, and I know many other manufacturers think the same. IHEEM can be really, really proud of the event, and how it has grown over the years.” PS: “Yes, of course.” LT: “I was so pleased with when that exhibition was started. It’s a perfect place for manufacturers and client teams to meet, and always really well supported.” JB: “Pete, As IHEEM’s current President, what have been the highlights for you and your association with the Institute over the years?”

IHEEM and other professional institutes are very keen to attract more female engineers.

it started to really work for me – that actually our Institute should be for the members, not the members for the Institute. I’m delighted that there’s been a continuous shift towards that focus ever since. I’m getting around to see other stakeholders; I went to Hong Kong, which was an amazing visit. Just seeing what was happening outside of the UK. We also need to understand quite how highly we’re regarded in the global marketplace.

‘Professionalising’ the role GM: (continued) “As to the impact IHEEM has had on me, it showed me how to be a professional engineer, and started to give me a professional context to how important the role is. I think the healthcare estate is now rising in prominence; people are beginning to see not just the costs of running healthcare buildings, but also the benefits that accrue from doing the job well. That, however, adds its own challenges, because we’ve got to maintain that piece and not go too technical on people. My team leader now

says: ‘If you are going to speak on a technical issue to a non-technical audience, don’t make it rocket science, make a traffic light. Talk in reds and ambers and greens, because they can understand that. Don’t talk about the spring or the other component that makes the machine work. It’s the consequence of engineering that they need to understand in a management context’.”

‘A tiny Institute’ at the time JB: “Thanks, Greg. Lawrence?” LT: “In my time, almost 40 years ago, it was quite different, because it was then a very tiny Institute. We were desperately trying to bring in new members. I also went around as many branches as I possibly could, and remember a Welsh branch dinner at Cardiff Castle where they had singers from the Welsh National Opera. For some reason I was dressed up in a gown. Being in castle, it was done with wooden platters and things like that. It was great, because it enabled me to meet a lot of people. The idea that John

Five-year ‘vision’ PS: “I think the highlight for me was being given the opportunity to help set the next five years’ strategic vision for IHEEM in terms of how it grows, and takes the opportunity to work in a slightly different way, i.e. embracing organisations like HefmA, reaching out to our university sector, and creating the corporate arm of IHEEM. I think just being given the opportunity to set that out. What has been delightful for me, amidst all the expert advice I’ve been given, is the journey, and the fantastic support of everybody around that agenda. So a big thank you to everybody for that.” JB: “Are there any thoughts on the next President at the moment?” PS: “We will be discussing that this afternoon.” JB: “Unless anybody else has any other particular comments, I think we’ve had quite a wide-ranging discussion. Thank you all for participating.”

With this a fascinating, topical, and stimulating Past-Presidents’ roundtable event ended, and the participants set of across the capital for a special lunch at London’s Athenaeum Hotel.
