INSTITUTE NEWS Major review of Technical Platforms launched
Following the recent IHEEM annual business planning meeting in Manchester, and in line with the Institute’s published strategic direction, a major review of the work and role of the Institute’s Technical Platforms is taking place.
Chief Executive Officer, Pete Sellars, said: “I am pleased to announce this review as part of our strategy to improve and professionalise the Institute’s offering to its members. It will incorporate a number of improvements, and address the recommendations from the Engineering Council following our recent re- accreditation.”
Pete Sellars has asked David Whiteley, the former Chief Engineer and Head of Standards and Guidance at the Department of Health, to undertake the review, working closely with colleagues at IHEEM’s
Head Office from a policy framework perspective, and within the standing Technology Platform Committee. David Whiteley explained: “There are a number of matters to address which will hopefully put the Technical Platforms’ role on centre stage, and place them on
Diocesan role At the end of last year, the Institute’s
Membership Development Manager, Chris Parker, left IHEEM after 12 years in post, moving to the staff of the Portsmouth Diocese of the Church of England – where he will act as the Diocesan Stewardship
Advisor, a role that involves supporting the local churches in resourcing and developing their mission.
He said: “Having spent much of my adult life in a volunteer leadership role of one sort or another in my home church, the opportunity to contribute to the wider church in a full-time capacity is one I am delighted to take. I will be able to use the skills and experiences gained during my time at IHEEM, and previously in my financial services career, in this exciting new role. “It’s been an eventful 12 years since I joined IHEEM, and I’ve seen a lot of changes. I believe, though, that I leave the Institute in a healthier state than when I joined, and I hope I have made a positive contribution to that. Thanks to all that have supported me during that time. 2020 and beyond will be very exciting for IHEEM, its members, and connections. I look forward to keeping in touch, and will follow progress with interest.”
a more professional footing. I’m pleased to be asked to support the Institute in this important initiative, which will hopefully enhance its reputation with the Engineering Council and professional Institute fraternity, and further professionalise the role of IHEEM`s registered Authorising Engineers, Authorised Persons, and other Authorised and Registered practitioners.”
Key elements being considered include the need for each Technical Platform to hold an affordable annual seminar for members, supported by Head Office staff, to update members on recent changes and developments within that particular discipline. Attendance would be automatically recorded towards a member’s CPD requirement, which is now especially important given that reporting of CPD has become mandatory for
registered engineers from this year under new Engineering Council requirements. David Whiteley added: “This is an opportunity for the Institute to improve its offer to members in a number of areas, and to support aspiring Estates and Facilities Managers going forward with a number of professional specialist discipline options. I look forward to working with Bill Millar (the Chair of the IHEEM Technology Platform Committee), and other colleagues on the Technology Platform Committee, in supporting them to take a more central role for IHEEM in the future, issuing practitioner guidance, and professionalising their respective disciplines”.
