Rugby refereeing legend to be the post-dinner guest

The after-dinner speaker on 6 May will be Nigel Owens MBE, one of the world’s best rugby referees, and the first openly gay man to referee at the highest level. Growing up in Mynyddcerrig, Wales, he first picked up the referee whistle aged 16. He officiated his first international game in 2005 – a match between Ireland and Japan in Osaka. Two years later, in 2007, he made his World Cup debut, refereeing the Argentina v Georgia game in Lyon. The only referee to have officiated at three consecutive Heineken Cup finals, he has also refereed a record six Pro14 finals. In 2015, he refereed the 2015 Rugby World Cup Final between New Zealand and Australia at Twickenham. As well as refereeing, Nigel Owens is a co-presenter on S4C’s ‘Jonathan’ – a rugby-themed Welsh language show hosted by

Jonathan Davies. He also co-presents the sports-themed Welsh language chat show, Bwrw.

In November 2008, he released his autobiography in Welsh, Hanner Amser (meaning ‘Half Time’). In 2017, he was a guest on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, and has also presented a BBC Panorama programme on ‘Eating Disorders in Men and Boys’. Awarded an MBE in June 2016, he continues to officiate at rugby matches worldwide. Last year he refereed in Japan at his fourth consecutive Rugby World Cup.
