JOURNAL OF THE INSTITUTE OF HEALTHCARE ENGINEERING AND ESTATE MANAGEMENT

FEATURES 19 PRESIDENT’S ROLE IN DELIVERING IHEEM ‘VISION’

The Institute’s busiest and biggest Healthcare Estates conference to date, addressing skills shortages through investment in training, education, CPD, and apprenticeships, joint working with other professional engineering bodies in pursuit of common aims, and further work to strengthen IHEEM’s national and international profile, were among the topics covered by Ian Hinitt in a wide-ranging President’s Address in November.

25 FEMALE ENGINEERS BREAKING DOWN BARRIERS

The first ‘half’ of an IHEEM ‘Diversity and Equality’ roundtable in early November in London saw participants discuss topics ranging from encouraging more people from diverse genders and black and ethnic minorities into the sector, and ‘alternative routes’ into healthcare engineering, to the workplace experiences of female engineers in a still largely male-dominated sector.

31 MOVING SUSTAINABILITY HIGHER UP THE AGENDA

‘Sustainability in the NHS’ was the title of a first day presentation by Professor Fiona Daly, Sustainability & EFM Workforce lead at NHS England and NHS Improvement, in the ‘Strategy & Leadership’ stream at October’s Healthcare Estates 2019 conference. She spoke of some of the key initiatives she and her team are leading to embed sustainable practice across all facets of NHS buildings.

37 ANAESTHETIC GAS IMPACT ON GLOBAL WARMING

IHEEM’s 2019 Regional Conference & Exhibition in Cardiff saw speakers discuss climate change’s wide-ranging impact on the operation and use of healthcare facilities. One presentation saw Mike Ralph, Principal engineer at NHSI/NHSE, and chair of the IHEEM Medical Gases Technical Platform, examine the contribution of medical gases and volatile anaesthetic agents to global warming, and potential ways to mitigate it.

43 PAPWORTH HOSPITAL CONTINUES TO INNOVATE Last May the new Royal Papworth Hospital began accepting its first patients. Like its 20th century predecessor, it will be the UK’s leading heart and lung hospital, expecting to undertake more heart, heart-lung, and lung transplants, than any of the other five adult such centres.

51 CARBON REDUCTION INITIATIVES REWARDED

A Northern Irish NHS Trust’s efforts to significantly reduce its carbon footprint and fossil fuel usage, and increase its renewable use, via ‘an innovative, multidisciplinary approach across the mediums of software, hardware, plant, design, contract analysis, and training’, were rewarded when it won the Lord Carter Innovation Award for 2019 in mid-November.

57 PROTECTING WALLS AND BRIGHTENING SPACES Creating a positive environment in healthcare settings significantly enhances patient wellbeing. A Product manager at Gradus outlines how good wall protection can contribute – by reducing wear and tear, and creating a more pleasant ‘healing environment’.

61 A COMPETENT AND CAPABLE WORKFORCE

The key role that the Engineering Council plays as the regulatory body for the UK engineering sector, the future of engineering education, and the need for the sector to ‘innovate to develop future engineers’, were among the areas covered in a Healthcare Estates 2019 conference presentation by the organisation’s CEO, Alasdair Coates, in October.

66 DESIGNING INTERIORS WITH DEMENTIA IN MIND

While certain elements, such as safety flooring, are a ‘must’ for healthcare facilities, in most cases a more tailored interior design is required – especially for care units for those living with dementia. What works for a hospital’s maternity ward may not, for example, suit a dedicated space for Alzheimer’s patients. The Healthcare Segment marketing manager at flooring manufacturer, Tarkett, explores the key points to consider when specifying for specialist healthcare projects, particularly in terms of choosing appropriate flooring.

71 ‘IN-HOUSE’ DRUG PREPARATION FACILITY

A specialist in the design and construction of cleanrooms, aseptic facilities, and other sophisticated environments, discusses the demanding requirements for hospital aseptic facilities, and how the healthcare sector can benefit here from the experience of the pharmaceutical industry.
