TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Big Bang Competition

THE BIG BANG: IHEEM PANEL COMMENCES COMPETITION JUDGING

The IHEEM Special Award for Innovation in Wellbeing and Healthcare Engineering heats judging took place at the end of March as part of The Big Bang Competition, with a specially selected panel of five Institute members scoring a long list of over 20 entries from students aged 11-18.

The Big Bang Competition and Fair are delivered by EngineeringUK, a not-for- profit driving change and inspiring more young people to choose engineering and technology careers. The free competition is available to individual and team submissions, encouraging students to problem-solve, think big, and get creative with science, engineering, and technology. Participants can benefit from gaining knowledge, research, and presentation skills, as well as building confidence and the opportunity to have expert feedback on their inventions. Last year’s winner of the award,

Vaishnavi Rudra, impressed judges with her proposal for ‘Health Hub’ – a multifunctional design offering a range of treatments and diagnostics to those

in need of medical attention in remote environments.

Judges were equally impressed with the entries received this year, with the long list demonstrating a trend towards technological and app-based design, as well as solutions promoting early detection and a ‘prevention is better than cure’ approach. Judges also remarked on

the powerful focus of students on tackling challenges particularly faced by different demographics and those from a range of sociocultural backgrounds.

The panel represent a wide range of career paths and professional focus, with each judge eager to be involved in The Competition and creative technologies and innovation submitted by the entrants.
