TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Head Office Head Office team expansion

In January, Lynn Bowden joined the IHEEM Head Office team as the Institute’s AE (Authorising Engineers) Registration Officer. Having worked extensively in management across the commercial sector for over 20 years in and around Portsmouth, Lynn felt the need to move on, and pivoted to management for a charity, which she found ‘very rewarding’.

When she subsequently relocated to the market

momentous partnership between IHEEM and NHSE and our combined work towards this agreement reflects the value in our profession working collectively to improve patient safety. “Looking to the future, the Institute remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding the highest standards across the AE profession, and in certifying and maintaining the register for every Authorising Engineer across the NHS England estate.”

Guidance and resources

In addition to next month’s annual Authorising Engineers Conference and exhibition, due to take place on the 7 July at Epsom Downs Racecourse, IHEEM has an array of support available for its AE members and those pursuing accreditation. The conference offers a focused in person opportunity for delegates to hear from the IHEEM AE community across a range of disciplines and hear the latest in guidance and Institute Technical Platform activity. The Institute is pleased to broaden its library of Pocket Guides at the Authorising Engineer Conference, with the release of two new publications: Institute Membership and Authorising Engineers, with the release of these resources offering user-friendly guides to professionals seeking to join the Institute and become a registered AE. In addition to this, IHEEM Mentors are

available to members with a wealth of experience across engineering disciplines and navigating the AE application process. The IHEEM Mentor Scheme has already proved highly popular and successful, with mentees looking for guidance encouraged to contact Head Office, who will suggest a trained mentor most suitable to their needs and specific circumstances.

town of Royal Wootton Bassett in Wiltshire, Lynn stayed with the charity and moved to their local branch – a role she “thoroughly enjoyed”. However, when, 11 years later, she decided to move back to the Portsmouth area, she regrettably had to hand her notice to the charity after 14 years of being part of their team. During her search for a new position, it came to her attention that the role at IHEEM was available. “Even though it’s a completely different role, I can honestly say I am really enjoying it. I’ve already learnt so many new skills,” Lynn says, noting that she is enjoying the transition from her more physical previous roles to an administrative and technical focus.

We are able to offer a range advice and resources to guide each member with their application

Lynn immediately felt at home at IHEEM. “The team in the office are very helpful and happy to offer support where needed as I develop into my role in supporting the Institute’s growing network of Authorising Engineers,” she says. “My role is new to IHEEM, and typically consists of processing AE applications and making sure all relevant information has been provided, before selecting a suitable review panel. Occasionally, if submissions are incomplete or fall short of the Institute’s requirements, we request further information from the applicant, but we are also able to offer a range advice and resources to guide each member with their application. “Once reviewed – and the panel agrees that the standards have been met – I will arrange an interview for the applicant, advise what the next steps are, and what is required of them. I also request references for AE members, as this is part of the internal governance process on application.” The Institute is delighted to welcome Lynn to the Head Office team as part of the drive to deliver on its commitment to supporting those seeking Authorising Engineers towards accreditation and the broader NHSE AE Register agreement. When she’s not busy with IHEEM’s AE register and certification process, Lynn enjoys spending time with her family, gardening, and walking her two chihuahuas, Pixie and Lexie.
