RPC BPI boosted by Plasgran purchase
Faerch to buy tray recycler
Thermoformed packag- ing producer Faerch Plast is acquiring 4PET Group, based in the Netherlands. 4PET manufactures PET sheet for thermoforming and also carries out recycling. At its recycling plant in
Duiven, Netherlands, 4PET recently started a new tray-to-tray PET recycling line, which it claims is unique for creating a PET tray closed loop. Faerch Plast CEO Lars Gade Hansen said: “The recycling system offered by 4PET Group is an innovative, industrial- scale break-through in our transition towards a sustainable circular economy. It enables us to take responsibility for the post-consumer phase of our trays.” The transaction is
expected to close during the third quarter of 2018, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals. 4PET has 200 employ-
ees at four sites. The company had a turnover of more than €50m.

RPC BPI Recycled Products has acquired Plasgran in the UK, widening its business in rigid plastics recycling. RPC BPI claims to be the largest PE film recycler in Europe, with capacity to recycle over 120,000 tpa of used plastics. Plasgran recycles 50,000 tpa of rigid plastics at its facility in Wimblington, Cam- bridgeshire.
Gerry McGarry, Managing
Director of RPC BPI, said: “With Plasgran joining our RPC BPI Recycled Products group, we are now clearly the largest plastics recycler in the UK and one of the largest in Europe. We are in a unique new position to help the UK step up its efforts to meet evermore pressing sustain- ability goals and to help the environment.” The combined business
will serve the UK and mainland Europe markets. The enlarged business will offer a closed-loop solution to clients. Plasgran Manag- ing Director Mark Roberts, who will continue to run the Plasgran business in RPC BPI, said: “This acquisition provides a major growth opportunity for both our businesses through an extended service offering for our clients.”
RPC BPI has facilities in Dumfries, Derbyshire, Gwent and Gloucestershire, and recycles PE from commercial, industrial, packaging and agricultural sources. Its parent company RPC Group is currently in talks with investment groups Apollo Global Management and Bain Capital about the possible sale of the company.

LyondellBasell and KIT team up in chemical recycling
Polyolefins producer LyondellBasell has entered a cooperation agreement with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) in Germany to advance chemical recycling of plastics. It said the focus of the venture is to develop a new catalyst and process technol- ogy to decompose post-consumer plastic waste, such as packaging, into monomers for reuse in polymerisation processes. Earlier this year LyondellBasell entered a 50:50 joint venture with Suez to acquire mechanical recycler Quality Circular Polymers. Bob Patel, Chief Executive Officer of LyondellBasell, said: “This new coopera- tion will be a major step towards chemical recycling and extend our contribution to the
circular economy.” “Chemical recycling is complementary to mechanical recycling and is able to manage multilayer and hybrid plastic materials, which can’t be easily recovered by mechani- cal recycling,” said the company. KIT will contribute technologies devel- oped for the thermal conversion of complex organic feedstock. “By introducing Lyondell- Basell’s advanced catalysts our processes will greatly improve depolymerization efficiency for polyolefin waste,” said Hans Leibold from KIT´s Institute for Technical Chemistry.
