EXTRUSION LINES | TECHNOLOGY

Technology providers are helping recyclers and converters to make higher-value products with recompounding and straight-to-sheet lines. David Eldridge finds out the latest developments in recycling/extrusion lines

Recycling lines go beyond the pellet to raise value

The extruder lies at the heart of the process through which plastics recyclers add value by producing a useable recycled pellet. Technology providers therefore strive to offer extrusion systems that are flexible enough to suit different recyclers using varied materials, and which can at the same time efficiently reprocess the material into a high-quality pellet. But recyclers do not need to produce just a simple recyclate pellet, as an increasing number of suppliers are developing systems that add even more value by producing a compound or a semi- finished product such as polymer sheet. Italy-based Binova, part of the Tecnova recycling equipment group, says it expects more and more requests for advanced systems, such as combined recycling and compounding lines. “This is due to the need to be able to treat second-choice prod- ucts or post-consumer scraps, trying to keep as much as possible the technical characteristics of the material introduced and/or even try to [en- hance] it by adding mineral fillers or whatever,” the company said. “The final quality of the product, ensured by technologically advanced systems,

allows the recycler or the compounder to also look at market sectors that were historically considered unrelated to his skills.” “Our company strategy is to keep the product at a high quality level, with the aim of convincing the market about the opportunity to [make] invest- ments able to ensure results that meet with the expectations,” said Binova. Binova’s extruder range comprises: EBB series

co-rotating twin-screw extruders, EMB single-screw extruders and special EMC cascade degassing extruders. The company’s broader offering in- cludes: complete plants for the production of masterbatch, compounds and recyclate; washing plants; sheet extrusion and co-extrusion lines; and special extrusion lines for the production of semi-finished products from plastic scrap in a direct process. In a cascade set-up of a recycling extruder and integrated compounding extruder, Binova offers options for single screw/single screw, twin screw/single screw and twin screw/twin screw extruders. These lines can be equipped with agglomerators and compactors for reprocessing
