Veolia project in UK to recycle PET trays in closed loop

Resource management company Veolia has launched its biggest UK plastics recycling project yet with a £70m investment which will include the country’s first tray-to-tray closed loop PET recycling facility in Battle- field, Shropshire. The facility will shred, wash, and

flake around 80,000 tonnes/yr of mixed plastics collected from homes and businesses across the country. Construction has already begun, with plans for the site to be operational by early 2026. The UK does not currently have a closed-loop facility to recycle PET trays into food grade materials due to the difficulty in achieving the required standards. “This innovative facility not only

advances our commitment to reduc- ing waste and carbon emissions but also positions us to meet the growing demand for effective recycling as Simpler Recycling legislation comes into effect, ensuring more of this material is responsibly recycled,” said Estelle Brachlianoff, CEO, Veolia. The France-headquartered group said £70m investment forms part of its broader commitment to the circular economy in the UK, with total invest- ments set to reach around £1bn by 2030. www.veolia.co.uk
