same polymers – by applying deep learning. Traditional near-infrared (NIR) sorting technology was unable to distinguish between food and non-food packaging, because of visual similarity and the use of the same polymers. Gain Next integrates with Tomra’s Autosort


platform, using AI trained on thousands of images to recognise subtle visual cues and, the company claims, achieve over 95% purity when separating PET, PP and HDPE food packaging from non-food items. Later in 2024, Tomra expanded the system with the Gain Next PET Cleaner application, designed to tackle opaque PET bottles alongside foils and textiles, removing over 92% of these contaminants. This not only increases rPET yield but also boosts market value. At PRSE 2025, Gain Next was named Recycling Machinery Innovation of the Year, praised as “an innovative recycling technology capable of solving complex sorting tasks … increasing sorting granularity”. The technology has since been demonstrated at WasteExpo, where it was show- cased alongside Tomra’s PolyPerception waste analyser, highlighting how AI sorting and real-time monitoring can work in tandem to raise both the


quantity and quality of recovered plastics.


Tracking for brands In June this year, Greyparrot unveiled Deepnest, which it calls “the world’s first waste intelligence platform for brands”, promising to link packaging producers with recyclers through real-world performance data. The launch, held during London Climate Week, drew representatives from FMCG brands and recyclers, including Mars, Costa, PepsiCo, Amcor, Dow, Biffa, Suez, Veolia, WRAP and Innovate UK.

learned from stakeholders across the recycling and packaging value chains,” said Greyparrot CEO Mikela Druckman. “It’s not just a product launch – it’s about collaboration.” Using AI-powered computer vision, Deepnest analyses millions of packaging items moving through waste facilities. It identifies materials, formats and brands, then aggregates the results into dashboards that track recyclability, contamina- tion rates and recovery outcomes. This data allows brands to benchmark packaging performance and redesign with circularity in mind.
