NPE 2018 | SHOW PREVIEW
Starlinger is presenting two technologies at NPE that it says are specifically aimed at closed loop packaging. The group developed a technology that neutralises odours that can prevent recyclate being used in packaging applications. This technology has just been nominated for a Plastics Recycling Award Europe in the category Best Technology Innovation in Plastics Recycling. The three-step procedure (material preparation, degassing, and post-treatment) works without the use of additives and removes even deeply embedded odours. At NPE, visitors can take a sniff of the input material and the smell-improved regrind at a laboratory table with sample stations. “Production in a closed loop is also a hot topic in
the area of FIBCs and consumer goods packaging. Thanks to Starlinger’s PET technology, customers are now starting to use rPET flakes as input material for their tape extrusion lines,” says Starlinger. Two types of packaging that are made from 100% rPET bottle flakes will be on display at NPE: an rPET flexible intermediate bulk container for large product volumes and an rPET PP*Star pinch bottom bag for dry bulk goods. The rPET PP*Star has recently won a WorldStar Award in the catego- ry Packaging Materials and Components. Discussing another application for rPET – sheet
production – Starlinger says its DeCon/ViscoSheet system can process 100% rPET, in-house waste, and virgin material at guaranteed IV levels for direct food contact. “Customers benefit from outstanding flexibility and low energy consumption; the final product has a high-quality appearance as well as exceptional mechanical properties,” says Starlinger.

The North American subsidiary ofWeima, the German shredder manufacturer, is one of the official recycling partners of NPE 2018. It is working with Commercial Plastics Recycling, which is collecting and reprocessing plastic scrap from the
show floor. Weima America will have a WLK 15 single-shaft shredder in operation in the Westwood parking lot at the show. “This program is an interactive opportunity to educate both exhibitors and attendees on how easily recycling machinery can be incorporated into a production line and how valuable plastic scrap can be,” said Weima. The largest machine that Weima will display at
NPE is a WLK 30 Super Jumbo, designed for shredding large pieces of scrap or large through- put quantities. As well as the robustness of the Super Jumbo line of machinery Weima highlighted its capacity for custom settings: “There are over 80 optional features available on these machines, giving Weima the ability to tackle an application with care. Every plastics shredding application is unique, and every Weima shredding solution is as well,” said the company. The Weima WKS will make its North American debut on the NPE2018 trade show floor. The WKS series can shred a wide range of material, from bulky objects to tear-resistant fibres and film. The shredder has a swing ram inside the cutting chamber, to enable consistent infeed of materials. An inspection flap inside the chamber allows for
