Sumitomo (SHI) Demag boosts automation

Sumitomo (SHI) Demag has set up an independent business unit for automa- tion. Headed by board member Andreas Schramm, the new unit will produce and integrate automated solutions for customer orders at the company’s Wiehe site, in Germany. Sumitomo (SHI) Demag said it believes there is considerable potential for increasing sales in the area of automation and associ- ated machinery and it is enhancing its sales, service and engineering systems accordingly. It intends to

enhance its offer by expand- ing its range of standard automation solutions and increasing the integration with the company’s injection moulding machines. Technology will be selected that meets the specific needs of relevant target industries in the market. In these target sectors, which include automotive, electronics and medical, the company will liaise closely with customers to identify and implement solutions for both existing needs and potential future automation applications. An example

shown at the Fakuma 2017 show was for a part-tracing application developed for the automotive industry. Sumitomo (SHI) Demag is planning to build an in-house testing facility in connection with the automa- tion project. The company said it will also step up cooperation with its existing automation partners. However, the responsibility for automated packaging applications on the El-Exis SP high-speed machines will remain with the Packaging business unit. www.sumitomo-shi-demag.eu
