reflect industry growth The record number of visitors who attended Fakuma 2017 saw advances in injection moulding technology on exhibitor stands and heard about MES developments that underpin the Industry 4.0 trend. Injection World reports

PE Schall said visitor numbers at Fakuma 2017 increased by nearly 6% from the previous event in 2015 to 48,375, while the number of exhibitors was 1,889. The 2017 event continued to provide an important platform for new injection moulding technology. Major suppliers paraded new ma- chines and demonstrated state-of-the art produc- tion. Executives announced buoyant sales figures and discussed important trends, such as Industry 4.0, in which many companies have made fast progress in developing tailored manufacturing execution systems (MES). Sumitomo (SHI) Demag expects its revenues to

increase by 17% to a new record of €273m in 2017, said CEO Gerd Liebig at the company’s media presentation at Fakuma 2017. The German-Japa- nese company also announced it was creating a separate business unit for automation (see News section in this issue).


Liebig said Sumitomo (SHI) Demag has contin- ued to grow its market share in packaging applica- tions and all-electric machines. According to the company’s calculations, its market share for high-speed injection moulding machines, such as for thin-walled packaging and caps and closures, increased from 13% in 2015 to 18% in 2016 and 2017 and is expected to reach 20% in the coming
