NEWS Engel sets up composites unit

Austrian injection moulding machinery firm Engel has established a new sub-divi- sion called Engel Compos- ite Systems, which is headed by Matthias Mayr and based at the large-scale machine plant in St Valentin. This, the company said, will support customers in project planning and series launch of production systems for the manufacturing of fibre-plastic composite components, forming an interface between the Centre for Lightweight Composite Technologies, the business units and the automation division. Over the last five years,

Technologies, which was founded in 2012, also at St Valentin, will focus more on interdisciplinary develop- ment of new processing techniques. The centre is now to be led by Norbert Müller, with the previous head, Peter Egger, transfer-

ring to Engel Applications Technologies. “Some processes have

grown out of the stage of fundamental development and are now being increas- ingly implemented in customer projects. This trend is reflected in the new

the centre has worked with customers, partner compa- nies and research institutes to develop fibre composite technologies and processes for high volume series production in automotive and consumer electronics. It also uses advanced tech- nologies like high pressure resin transfer moulding and sheet moulding composite, the processing of semi- finished thermoplastic products like thermoplastic fabric and tapes, and reactive technologies, such as in situ polymerisation. www.engelglobal.com
