Sumitomo (SHI) Demag boosts capacity in China
Sumitomo (SHI) Demag China has started construc- tion of a new 4,000 m² production hall at its solar-powered site in Ningbo, which will double the company’s machine production capacity in the country. The new production hall will not only provide more manufacturing space, but also expand production to include the larger tonnage Systec Servo machines. “Until now, our production has been limited to machines with clamp forces up to 1,000 tons,” said CEO Pietro Scattarreggia. “Given the demand for larger precision components, being able to extend our product portfolio up to 1,500 tons means we
Bericap sees strong demand

can drastically reduce delivery times for customers in China and Asia.” To support the manufac-
turing of the larger and heavier Systec Servo machines, the Ningbo production hall is installing stronger cranes. The new facility is set to
open in autumn 2023 to coincide with the group’s 25th production anniversary in China. Installation of a new solar system means the facility will no longer be affected by future energy rationing.

SUSCC installs Wittmann workcell
A plastics education program at Southern Union State Community College (SUSCC) in Opelika, AL, US, is using a Wittmann injec- tion moulding 4.0 workcell to help train the next
generation of plastics industry processors. The workcell consists of a SmartPower120 moulding machine with an integrated robot, TCU, and drying unit. A separate Wittmann robot

is tethered caps, which will become mandatory in Europe from July 2024 on single-use plastic bever- age bottles with a capacity of up to 3 litres. Bericap is already competing strongly in this area with the ClipAside, which can be mass produced for all relevant neck finishes. With 26 production plants across the world, Bericap said it is building on this positive develop- ment and remains on track for growth of around 5% this year. Its geographic expansion continues into new markets including Southeast Asia, Africa and South America, and it is planning new production plants in Vietnam and Kenya at the end of 2023.

Protolabs launches 3D printing DFM analysis
Protolabs has launched Design for Manufacturability (DFM) analysis for 3D printed parts. This represents a significant advancement within 3D printing as it provides added assurance that a part is suitable for manufacturing before committing to production. Andrea Landoni, Protolabs EMEA’s
3D Printing Product Manager, said: “Whilst [3D printing] technology offers

great flexibility, there are a few limitations that engineers must be aware of and the DFM analysis provides that guidance in seconds.” The system highlights all issues to
the user, whether they are critical, such as parts that are too large to be produced, or non-critical, like dimen- sions that are close to thresholds.
