THIN WALL MOULDING | INNOVATION

it makes the material a more cost- effective option in the long run because it is currently the only packag- ing material that can be processed as a recycled material on an industrial scale and used again for food-contact packaging.

Engel says that it specifically developed the E-speed 280/50 injection moulding machine with its electrical clamping unit and hydraulic injection unit for thin-wall injection moulding. The new injection unit is said to be able to achieve injection speeds of up to 1,400 mm/s at a maximum injection pressure of up to 2,600 bar when processing small shot weights with an extreme wall-thickness-to-flow-path ratio.

Cost efficiency

K2022 also saw the world premiere of Sumitomo (SHI) Demag’s cleanest, most economical and energy efficient all-electric packaging machine to-date, called PAC-E. Engineered specifically for manufacturers of beverage closures and thin- walled packaging applications, the new high- speed injection moulding machine builds upon the

success of the established El-Exis SP. At the K Show, the company demonstrated the new machine’s capabilities by using a 350 tonne clamp force PAC-E model to manufacture 2,100 beverage caps per minute. Two critical innovations differentiate PAC-E, says Sumitomo (SHI) Demag. The electric-driven axes deliver up to 50% in energy savings when meas- ured against a high-speed hybrid packaging machine, and the lubrication of the toggle lever no longer causes cleanliness issues, as its completely closed-circuit design means it is leak free. Arnaud Nomblot, Director, Business Develop-

ment Packaging, says: “This machine will enable processors to produce even thinner and lighter
