Then, Professor Dr Ulrich Moosheimer, of Munich University of Applied Science in Germany, will discuss how printed electronics can enhance the attractiveness of consumer packages. Dr Ralf Zichner, research and business unit manager at Fraunhofer Institute for Electronic Nano Systems (ENAS), will present a paper explaining how printed antennas that are optimised for wireless communications can be integrated into packaging. The session ends with a presentation by Joao De Oliveira, VP business develop- ment at Pragmatic in the UK, on ‘Flexible integrated circuits – the form factor for billions and trillions’.


Pharmaceutical applications The final session of the day features Jos Geboers, director of Confrerie-Clinique of the Netherlands. He will showcase the company’s smart medication bottle, in a talk about microelectronics for in-line commercial packaging. François Bidet, director of business development for EMEA at CSP Technologies in France, discusses enhancing shelf life and simplifying package design for transdermal and oral solid dose drug delivery with engineered polymers for head-space management. And finally, Hui Lee, senior director of business development from E Ink Corporation in the USA, talks about the company’s electronic paper and how it is a perfect match for smart packaging.


Real-world uses Day two of the conference begins with a look at real-world opportunities in smart packaging, with a talk from Christopher Waterhouse, managing director at UK-based consultancy iDi PAC. Smart packaging also plays a vital role in enhancing


the customisation and security of products. Dr Peter Schkoda, head of sales FMCG at Hapa in Switzerland, discusses late-stage customisation with zero lead time, zero material waste and mass customisation. After this, Peter Buttiens, CEO of ESMA in Belgium, will present his views on smart packaging and security applications. The day’s third session features Steve McCormick,

Harnessing active and intelligent technologies to add value to flexible and rigid packaging


R&D director at Technovate in the UK, who focuses on non-metallic RFID tags in the food industry. Nuria Herranz Solana, head of the intelligent, active and packaging technologies research group at ITENE in Spain, then discusses the success story of a freshness indicator. Following this is a paper from Laurent Tonnelier, CEO of Mobilead – FTAG, in France looking at how smart identifiers for packaging in food industries is evolving to deliver convenient, personalised, reliable and trusted information to consumers.


Material developments The final session of the conference focuses on new material developments to improve food packaging and extend shelf life. Dr Paola Massari, senior researcher from Basell Poliolefine Italia in Italy, delivers a presentation on a newly developed family of polypropyl- ene (PP) copolymers supporting the food packaging industry in its aim to extend food shelf life. Next, there is a look at enhancing the consumer experience from Fabrice Digonnet, the new business development leader EMEA at Switzerland- based Dow Europe. Closing the conference is Dr Grégory Coué, technical manager at Plásticos Compuestos in Spain, whose paper will explore antimicrobial and antibacterial masterbatches for direct food contact packaging.
