For example, an increasing older population is providing economic and health-related challenges for packaging and beverage companies, while the younger generation value authenticity and environmental sustainability. A growing middle class in emerging regions of the world is also changing packaging requirements. CSI adds that the caps and closures market is also
influenced by the needs of bottlers and brand owners. Trends among CSI’s customers include wellness, requiring healthy and safe packaging sealing solutions, as well as consumer convenience and functionality for increased branding marketability and shelf differentiation. Product integrity and preservation is also essential and cost reduction is still one of the most critical components facing consumer packaged goods companies. requirements include the Sport Flip Top 38mm – a versatile high performance sports cap designed for one-hand opening for on-the-go convenience of hot-fill beverages, sport drinks, juices and functional waters. For bottled water and other still beverages, the Aqua- Lok 29.25 EP has a wide diameter size for all demo- graphics, while its low profile height enables minimisa- tion of material costs. For brand owners, CSI has developed a number of custom closure technologies called Studio C Creations, offering advanced decoration and functionality, such as unique shapes and over-caps. New custom carafe closures are claimed to be ideal for differentiating dairy, juice and other non-carbonated
beverage brands. These double-wall caps offer good aesthetics and have easy-to-grip shapes. CSI has also developed the HF-Lok V 38mm and 33mm, which are one-piece, lightweight closures for hot-filled, non-car- bonated beverages. These caps provide economic and environmental benefits, but also advanced band break before seal release tamper evidence and smart venting for consumer safety and product security. CSI says that future developments for caps and
closures will include the need to provide secure sealing on many pack types and sizes containing healthy beverages, such as plastic bottles, glass bottles, aluminium bottles, pouches and cartons. CSP Technologies has developed Activ-Seal closures with gas scavenging technology built directly into an induction-sealed, tamper-evident screw cap. The closure’s orifice-reducing element is affixed onto the top of the bottle during the induction sealing process. It is covered by a lift and peel foil seal which, once removed, enables metered dosing. The scavenging component, offering combinations of moisture, volatile organic compounds (VOC), and odour management, is permanently positioned on the underside of the orifice reducer, ensuring the product protection never leaves the bottle, even after opening. Non-scavenging and larger orifice versions are also available. Offering optimised capacity and uptake rates, Activ-Seal closures are claimed to offer significant improvement over more traditional methods of ensuring product stability, such as inserting canisters or sachets, which require additional insertion equipment and carry the risk of accidental ingestion. Complexity and costs also are reduced, since only one moulded piece is needed for all scavenging requirements. Bericap has introduced the HexaLite 26 and 29 mm
– lightweight and user-friendly closure solutions for still water. The company says that the emphasis in the past has been on reducing the weight of closures, particularly in the food and beverage sector. Cost
