The range of applications extends beyond foods to other industrial film applications where the protection of sensitive goods from UV radiation is required, Tosaf added. Ampacet’s UVBlock 1496 is a UV barrier masterbatch for food and industrial packaging that is an alternative to conventional phenolic benzotriazole additives, some of which have been added to the European ECHA list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC), the company says. The new additive is formulated without intentional addition of SVHC and is approved for food contact in Europe and the US. The company says it offers good UV barrier performance in the low UVA and UVB wavelength range.

characteristics similar to traditional fluoropolymer- based options, reducing friction between the polymer and the metal – allowing polymer to be more easily extruded. It helps reduce melt fracture, eliminate die build-up and lower torque for higher throughput. Reducing melt fracture, also known as sharkskin, can also improve optical properties, boosting product appearance.
It can deliver these benefits at the same dosage levels as traditional additives while meeting Greater China, GB 9685-2016, US FDA, and EU food-contact safety regulations, says Avient. It can be used in polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) films for flexible packaging, as well as cast PP films and PE tubing for various food packaging applications, such as stand-up pouches, labelling tubes and laminated tubes. It is manufactured in China, Thailand and the US and available to customers in Asia, the US and Canada.
UV blocker A new UV blocking additive from Tosaf, UV9389PE EU, is designed to block UV radiation from 200 nm to 380 nm in thin, transparent food packaging and help protect food from discoloration or vitamin and flavor loss, the company says. The additive has high efficiency and low dosage. “Unlike conventional mineral-based products of
this type, the optical properties and in particular the transparency of films finished with UV9389PE EU are almost completely retained,” according to Tosaf.

Asian changes Meanwhile, additives manufacturer SI Group is making changes to its Asian operations – closing two production plants there. It plans to close its alkylphenol manufacturing facility – on Jurong Island in Singapore – in the second half of next year. It will continue supplying alkylphenols from its Europe and North American facilities. The company opened the Singapore facility in 2006 to supply Asia-Pacific consumers and to make SI antioxidants. However, recent changes in the antioxidant value chain in the region – and the high cost of production in Singapore – has led to the decision. “The current supply-demand balances in Asia and the cost to manufacture in the region, make this a necessary move to ensure the long-term sustain- ability of our global business,” according to Joey Gullion, senior vice president and chief commercial officer at SI. In addition, it has ended manufacturing at its Jinshan site in China, which made a range of products including its Naugard antioxidant. SI will now supply these products through a long-term supply partnership with Liaoning Dingjide Petro- chemical.
