MACHINERY | MELT FILTRATION
Right: Break Machinery has taken on ADG Solutions as a new distributor for its melt filters in the US
the technology is used to filter low viscosity poly- mers, it says. The Eco filter is self-cleaning with a rotating, perforated drum, through which there is a continuous flow of melt from the outside to the inside. A scraper removes contami- nants from the surface and feeds them to the discharge system. This enables the filter to be used automatically and without disrup- tions over long periods. Benefits include: reliable melt filtration; ultra-low melt losses constant pressure curve; fast spreading of the contamination; and short residence time of the melt in the filter.
“Sustainable technologies for recycling and the
circular economy are becoming increasingly important – whether they are solutions for mechani- cal or chemical recycling or machines optimised for energy and resource efficiency for the produc- tion, processing or treatment of plastics,” said Ueli Thürig, president of Maag.
Non-stop filtration BB Engineering (BBE), based in Remscheid, Germany, says it has recently grown its capabilities in rPET fine filtration. It says its non-stop filtration equipment can be retrofit- ted to existing or new machinery to make it rPET-ready. The company says an interruption-
free process is guaranteed by an easy switch-over between congested and clean filter inserts. “With an increasing demand for high-quality applications like melt spinning, the requirement for finer filtration is gaining importance,” said Matthias Schmitz, head of engineer- ing recycling technology at BBE. “Filter

ratings of 20 microns or finer are in operation.” One of BBE’s latest innovations is called white
filter cleaning (WFC), a pre-cleaning system for filter media and filter housings that does not use hazardous and harmful chemicals such as TEG. Instead, superheated steam is used to remove residues on the filter media via hydrolysis. The treatment is environmentally friendly and improve performance and extends filter life, he says. “With WFC, we are offering an alternative to

TEG cleaning, and a solution to reduce filter cleaning costs by 50%,” he said. “It uses nothing but superheated steam to free the filter cartridges from polymer and contamination via
hydrolysis. A quick switch between production and cleaning reduces manpower to a minimum and guarantees reliable availability of the filtration.”

Italian expansion ADG Solutions, a US-based recycling equipment distributor
and supplier, recently expanded its product line to include equipment from Break Machinery of Italy. Break offers a range of automatic and efficient
filtration equipment and recently introduced its Duo self-cleaning double filter system. The new design is considered suitable for fine or course filtration and can filter heavy levels of contaminants with the help of a double screen design which achieves maximum productivity while guarantee- ing high product quality. The Duo offers a constant pressure operation to maximise line productivity with minimal waste for highly contaminated materials. The new geometry of the scrap disc and innovative discharge system allow contamination to be removed in a rapid, controlled way, while the shape of the six-blade rotating scraper disc is said to offer good cleaning even at low speeds. The company says the unit is simple to operate, and the general design reduces cleaning and replacement times for both the filter and blades. “Taking the best quality machinery and marrying it with our advanced industry knowledge allows us to help our customers transform plastic scrap into high-value raw material,” said Sandy Guthrie, president of ADG.
