BASF is expanding production capacity of its Neopor EPS foam by 50,000 tonnes/year

EPS expansion BASF is expanding production capacity of its Neopor expandable polystyrene (EPS) foam by 50,000 tonnes/year. The increase is aimed at meeting the growing market demand for the grey insulation material. The start-up of the new production facilities is scheduled for early 2027. Neopor is a graphite-containing EPS granulate used mainly as a raw material for making insulation materials for building envelopes. The graphite gives the material its grey colour and enhances insulation performance by up to 30% compared to white EPS, says BASF. “Our ambition is to be the preferred chemical company to enable our customers’ green transformation,” said Stephan Kothrade, chief technology officer of BASF. “Neo- por is an excellent example of how we can achieve this.” BASF anticipates rising demand for materials for energy-
efficient building renovations. The European Union aims to make the European building sector climate-neutral by 2050. To achieve this, implement- ing the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) in all EU member states imposes high requirements for improving energy efficiency. BASF says that other products – such as Neopor BMB and Mcycled with optimized sustainability profiles – are further optimised for sustainability. Neopor BMB has a lower CO2 footprint than classic
Neopor. At the beginning of production, fossil raw materials are replaced with renewable versions. In the production of Neopor F 5 Mcycled, mechanically recycled EPS waste is partially used as a raw material, helping to close the recycling loop for EPS. Using these materials not only reduces CO2 emissions during building, but also the footprint of the building itself, says BASF.
