introducing the Chiguard GA403 additive first in PET bottle applications. This year, the company rolled out the technology more broadly. In a presentation at the NPE exhibition in May, Gacek described the additive’s high absorption in the UV-A wavelength region, which makes it suitable for protecting UV-sensitive contents of clear PET containers or for optical applications (for example glasses, screens) requiring blue light absorbance. The additive has high heat stability and can be used in PET, PC, PA, PMMA, PP and PE. In addition to protecting from UV light wavelengths for a given application, UV-blocking formulations seek a balance between initial colour, discoloration after UV aging, and photopermanence, said Gacek. Experiments with blends of different types of additives from Chitec found that blends of Chiguard GA403 with 380W (a phenyl benzoxazine UV blocker) and 5431 (a benzotriazole UV absorber) showed the best balance of these properties, along with blocking UV transmittance up to 400 nm. Dover Chemical announced that the European

Food Safety Agency (EFSA) has published a safety assessment endorsing Doverphos LGP12 (liquid green phosphite) for EU food contact. The company says that the antioxidant has a cleaner toxicology profile than traditional phosphite stabilisers and has been designed with “future compliance” in mind, as regulatory bodies increase scrutiny of human health effects from additives and their degradation products. The additive is a high molecular weight polymeric phosphite and its high phosphorus content allows it to be used at lower loading levels, both of which contribute to low migration. The additive received US FDA clearance for food contact in LLDPE in 2019 and for HDPE in 2023. The company reports that it has recently submitted requests for food-contact approval from other major global regulatory bodies.

HDPE as well as in PP and engineering resins. A modified version of the new additive, SongNox 9228T, contains a small fraction of tri-isopropanol amine and is a solid product designed for masterbatches. The company’s triazine UV absorber additive, SongSorb 1164, can be used either for improving outdoor

weathering in polyolefins and engineering plastics or for

improving UV stability of polyolefins used in food-contact

packaging applications. Songwon says it has developed a carbon

reduction roadmap that aims to achieve net-zero neutrality with regard to Scope 1 (direct) and Scope 2 (indirect) emissions by 2050. The company says that it has increased the availability of life cycle assessments (LCAs) for its core products. At NPE 2024, Clariant highlighted two light

stabilisation additives for agricultural films in the Americas. The Addworks AGC additives can be used by masterbatch producers or directly by film converters. Addworks AGC 102G was especially designed

for greenhouse films applications and delivers superior UV protection under a harsh chemical environment, which is particularly important for the intensive agricultural industry where high sulphur, chlorine and iron concentrations are used. “We are seeing increasing use of chemicals and

increasing UV exposure levels,” said Eliandro Felipe, head of sales Americas for additives polymer solutions. “Films need to last three to five years in the field, and the additive is used to prevent premature degradation. Meanwhile, the additive also reduces haze, maintaining film transparency and boosting efficiency of crop growth.” In the same range, Addworks AGC 970G was developed for mulch film applications, protecting the film from UV exposure and chemicals, while it supports film converters to enhance productivity through efficient dosage. Clariant also brought AddWorks PKG 158 to the

North American region, in response to the increased use of recycled materials by compounders and polymer producers. The highly efficient antioxidant solution provides colour protection and reduces thermal oxidative degradation of the polymer during multiple
