Simona reports fall in 2024 sales and profits

Germany-based Simona says that profits declined in 2024, despite an increase in sales volumes. Group revenue fell around 3% to €581 million, while profitability (EBIT) declined by 27% to nearly €39m. All three sales regions

reported downturns. Sales in the EMEA region fell by nearly 4% compared to the previous year, and by 2% in the Americas – despite high demand from the chemicals and semiconductor indus- tries. Plastic sheet accounts for the bulk of business in this region. In Asia-Pacific, business fell by around 3%, though it held on to business in China and India. In terms of business lines, the industry division saw a 5% dip in revenue, despite higher volumes. This was driven by lack of demand for fluoropolymers. Infrastruc- ture enjoyed a 7% rise, thanks mainly to the market

for energy transition in Europe – for which Simona supplies pipes, fittings and protective sheets. The mobil- ity division (down 11%) and advertising & building (down 5%) also suffered. “Market conditions in

2024 proved challenging for us at a global level,” said Matthias Schönberg, CEO of Simona. “After a robust final quarter, we closed the financial year on a positive note and exceeded our

adjusted revenue guidance.” Simona says it reached

several sustainability milestones, including: commissioning a battery- based energy storage system at its Kirn headquar- ters; and fitting solar power systems at Simona America, which will cover around a fifth of its electricity needs. The company has since

reported Q1 results for 2025, which saw sales rise by around 4% – though profitability (EBIT) fell by nearly 15%. This was partly due to currency losses due to the exchange rates of the Chinese and Turkish currencies. In addition, a lack of wind power in Germany meant that Simona had to purchase extra electricity at higher prices. “Our projection for 2025

is revenue of €610-620m,” said Schönberg – which equates to a growth of 5-7%. www.simona.de

EVOH film capacity expansion

US-based Pregis is expand- ing capacity of ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) barrier film at its Anderson, South Carolina facility. Increased production of these multi-layer films will allow it to scale products including its Renew series. B-Series sealant film is the most recent development in the Renew portfolio. It is designed to replace metallised or PVDC films, offering an all-PE, mono- material flexpack structure. Pregis also offers a metallised version. “This expansion ensures our ability to support customers with high-quali- ty, high-barrier structures that meet today’s perfor- mance standards while enabling store drop-off recyclability,” said Bob Gargione, president of Pregis Performance Flexibles. www.pregis.com

CNG expands in Ohio with $106m investment

Charter Next Generation (CNG) is to expand at two locations in Ohio. The speciality film manufacturer will

expand operations at its Lexington campus and add extra capacity in Ontario. CNG plans to add 125 new positions while retaining 1,236 jobs across both sites. It will invest more than US$106 million in building work, and new machinery and equipment. CNG will build a 157,000 sq ft

expansion at the Lexington campus to accommodate 12 new film packaging lines. It will also introduce four new extrusion lines in Ontario to meet

growing demand in consumer goods. “Through continued investment in speciality films and material science, we are proud to strengthen the local workforce,” said Kathy Bolhous, chairman and CEO of CNG. CNG worked with partners includ-

ing Team NEO, JobsOhio, the Ohio Department of Development (ODOD) and Richland Area Chamber & Eco- nomic Development to ensure the expansion remained in Ohio – rather than other parts of the country where CNG also has operations. https://cnginc.com
