SHEET MATERIALS | MATERIALS

Sheet innovations just keep on rolling

Recent developments in sheet materials include greater use of recyclate, a product engineered to withstand harsh conditions and a new optical-grade line in the US

Sheet materials have a remarkable range of uses, from point-of-sale displays to stadium roofs – with plenty of highly technical applications in between. US-based Plaskolite recently opened a new

sheet extrusion line at its facility in Zanesville, Ohio. Part of an US$11.9 million expansion of the

facility, the investment includes a new cleanroom, extrusion line, additional equipment and facility upgrades to support increased production. The line began producing thermoplastic sheet of high optical quality earlier this year, after construction and equipment installation in late 2024. The expansion will create 38 new jobs. The line produces mainly optical-grade polycar-

bonate and acrylic sheet in a range of thicknesses and sizes. Plaskolite says the line allows it to produce low-distortion, ultra-clean sheet. Produc- tion in a cleanroom eliminates dust and particu- lates, ensuring defect-free surfaces ideal for

optically critical applications. The sheet will be used in a range of end uses and downstream processes. In some cases, Plaskolite extends sheet capability with functional coatings – which can enhance scratching, marring and weathering resistance, or add benefits such as anti-fog, anti-graffiti, anti-glare and anti-reflection. Typical products made from the sheet include safety glazing, Class A-rated architectural materials, medical device components and lighting diffusers. The cleanroom environment – and camera monitor- ing – ensure that the products meet quality stand- ards. One example is protective barriers made from its Tuffak range of polycarbonate sheet, which are used in banks, convenience stores and govern- ment buildings.
