stabilisation masterbatch in LLDPE geomembranes for the mining and petroleum industries. These had to withstand harsh temperatures and chemicals, while still delivering an extended life. Phenolic and phosphite anti-oxidants could not ensure that the product passed two key ASTM standards for OIT. T- 1111 enabled FD to develop a very highly loaded masterbatch that was tested by the ge- omembrane customer in an approval process requiring several scale-up production trials, with subsequent product testing. “We are pleased with the OIT test results from

T-1111 because it proves that the product meets our geomembrane customer’s tough require- ments,” said Séguin. “This technology also offers us huge potential for sales growth in geomembrane applications and may be of interest to customers in other sectors.”

Both additives offered FD customisable solu- tions to address their customer’s key concerns, while Baerlocher’s extensive test data on RST products avoided the need for additional testing. Since RST can be used for GRAS applications, it is ideal for FD’s target products, including food packaging film. “Products based on our RST platform surpass

traditional stabilisation technologies, helping customers boost performance, comply with rigorous standards and streamline processing,” said Victor Satov, account manager for Canada and North East Region at Baerlocher USA.

and Europe that was OK – but the Chinese govern- ment has changed that,” he said. To develop its new MB25-235 grade, the company reviewed all the materials with registered CAS numbers that had full food approval, to develop a solution with equivalent or better performance. That meant offering stable and long-lasting slip performance with no migration of the additive to the film surface. The absence of migration means the additive only needs to be included in the surface layer, so it can match or undercut the cost of traditional alternatives such as erucamide and minimises the impact on downstream operations such as printing or metallisation. Low addition levels of 2-4 wt% means haze is also minimal.

Faster formulation Sanitized says that a special twin-screw extruder has helped it develop new antimicrobial master- batches more quickly. This investment allows targeted, customer-spe- cific development of antimicrobial masterbatch qualities in many types of polymer. Masterbatches of low to high-melt polymers can be made, while two nozzle plates allow the extrusion of polymer strands and tapes for further examination of their antimicrobial effectiveness. The twin-screw extruder is used to process Sanitized’s additives into both commodity and engineering plastics. “The protective aims for polymer products are highly individual, as are the production conditions,” said Renaud Houy, head of sales for polymers at the company. “We are helping polymer processors outline the entire production cycle and test the antimicrobial efficacy.”
