Infrastructure pipe arrives at project site

Australia-based Vinidex has supplied 27km of water and wastewater pipe to an ongoing infrastructure project near Brisbane on the east coast. The pipe is being supplied as part of the A$270 million (US$174m) Unitywater Aura and Harmony infrastructure programme. To mark the milestone,

team members signed a section of 900mm diameter pipe, which will be the first installed along Bellflower Road, Sippy Downs, connecting future Harmony residents to a water supply sourced from Ewen Mad- dock Dam. In total, around 160

semi-trailer deliveries of pipe have arrived on site from Vinidex. Unitywater’s construction

partner McConnell Dowell will begin laying of pipe- lines in a staged approach in three different directions. “With a projected

population of 69,000 residents in Stockland’s Aura development by 2056 – and 21,000 residents in Avid’s Harmony development by 2036 – the programme is vital to ensure the long-term sustainability and develop- ment of these areas,” said Anna Jackson, CEO of Unitywater. n Prior to this, Unitywater acquired a minority stake in Detection Services Group (DSG), which provides leak detection and pipe condi- tion assessment services to

water and wastewater businesses in Australia and New Zealand.

It also bought a minority

stake in Pipeline Inspection and Assessment (PIA), a spin-off of DSG. PIA holds the licence to a patented pipeline transient technol- ogy (P-Cat) developed by the University of Adelaide, currently used to help water utilities understand the condition and performance of long-distance pipelines. www.unitywater.com www.vinidex.com.au

Saudi Plastic Products Company (Sappco) has secured a contract to supply high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes for a US$426mn sea water cooling project in the Jazan region. The plastic pipe produc- er said the contract follows the deal signed earlier with China Harbour Engineer- ing Company (CHEC) to supply its large-diameter HDPE pipes to the project. The company added

that the contract, awarded by the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu (RCJY), is a step forward in the first-tier development of Jazan City.

“Our HDPE pipes will play a critical role in this project, forming a part of the initial phase of the seawater cooling system,” said a spokesman.

Trex expands its film recycling scheme

WPC decking manufacturer Trex says it has revamped its NexTrex plastic film recycling programme to make it easier to participate.

Under the new structure, any

participating organisation that collects at least 1,000 lbs (454 kg) of recycled plastic film during a 12-month period qualifies to receive a composite bench from Trex. The company says its composite decking is made from 95% recycled materials, including a mix of industrial

wood scrap and polyethylene (PE) plastic film upcycled from common household items. Each year, the company uses more than 1 billion lbs of reclaimed materi- als to make its products – including around 400m pounds (182 tonnes) of plastic film. “Trex is committed to educating and engaging the public in the responsible recycling of plastic film,” said Emily Whitacre, recycling programmes coordinator at Trex.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for organisations to be part of our upcycling process.” There are five steps to taking part:

registering, determining a 12-month collection period, collecting at least 1,000 lbs of film, reporting totals and delivering film to a collection partner. Trex provides registered participants with up to three collection bins, as well as a list of qualifying materials. www.trex.com www.nextrex.com
