Correct orientation: latest in PVC-O pipe
Recent PVC-O innovations include simulating pipe components using digital tools, a new way to form a Rieber socket and installing 1200mm pipe in a water project in Uruguay
Oriented PVC (PVC-O) pipe can offer advantages, such as low density, high strength and ease of installation. Several speakers at the recent PPXXI conference – held in the US – addressed the topic of PVC-O pipe. For example, Molecor of Spain has proposed using its 1200mm PVC-O pipe to improve the capacity of water supply to the metropolitan area of Montevideo in Uruguay. The plan includes building a new raw water intake, water treatment plant and freshwater reservoir, and interconnecting the system to other locations. The idea is to connect a new drinking water
treatment plant near the water intake – to be built on the Río de la Plata – with the urban network of Montevideo. The Río de la Plata is a body of water 250km long and 32km wide. “We propose installing 1200mm PVC-O pipes,” said Ignacio Munoz, CEO of Molecor. “The project has considered a total distance of 72,600m from

the source to the destination.” He said that pumping water – to a height of
around 185m – would be one-third less than that of doing it in ductile iron pipes, as well as offering other advantages such as lower weight and resistance to corrosion.
Rieber socket Orlando Martinez, of Sica America, explained a new procedure for forming a Rieber socket in PVC-O pipes that are used for pressurised water distribution. Gasketed sockets can be manufactured using two methods, he said: the mechanical mandrel method – where, before laying the pipeline, the gasket is inserted into the socket, meaning it can later be removed and replaced; or the Rieber method, in which a pipe has an integrated socket complete with a non-removable, non-replaceable gasket.
