AMI’s first Polymer Testing & Analysis confer- ence in North America provides a perfect forum to discover new ways for testing of raw materials and products for quality assurance. The event takes place at the Marriott Pittsburgh City Center in Pittsburgh, PA, US, on 19-20 Septem- ber 2017. In addition to its packed two-day programme of focused presentations from leading testing experts, the two-day conference

will also offer high-level networking for professionals from throughout the plastics supply chain. For more information about attending, sponsoring or exhibiting, visit

the conference website or contact Senior Conference Coordinator Kelly DeFino. Tel: +1 610 478 0800; Email kd@amiplastics-na.com.

of polymer ageing. He will be followed by Eric O’Donnell, Managing Director of Sports Labs in Scotland, who will discuss characterisation of wear/ ageing performance of various yarns. Mark Alessandro, Global R&D Durability Engineering Manager at Avery Dennison Corporation, will present on durability evaluation of vinyl films using high irradiance metal halide testing.

Working with big data Session three provides an opportunity to find out about how big data is being used in the development of high performance polymer seals for downhole applications in the oil & gas industry. This presentation will be given by Xiaobin (Betty) Huang, Polymer Research Scientist, and Wayne Furlan, Manager of the Polymer Group at Baker Hughes. Investigations into the effect of sample length on plastic pipe quick burst pressure test results will be presented by Fred W Hensel, Owner and Engineer at Testing Solutions, while Marissa Douglas, General Engineer at the US Army Natick Soldier Research Development and Engineering Center, will discuss the evaluation of extruded polymer matrices containing microencapsulated essential oils for vector and pest protection. The fourth and final session of the day will be opened

by Dr Fran Adar, Principal Raman Applications Scientist at Horiba Scientific, who will speak about the applica- tion of Raman microscopy for characterisation of polymeric materials with 1µm spatial resolution. The presentation will cover characterisation of chemical composition, morphology, orientation and crystallinity, contaminants. Dmytro Stratiychuk-Dear, Research

Engineer at DuPont Teijin Films, will offer an insight into the characterisation of particle size distribution of additives within polyethylene terephthalate composites. This work has allowed a better understand of mixing mechanisms and has helped improve the surface design or bi-axially oriented films. The first day of the conference will be brought to a close by Tim Haake, General Manager at Goettfert, who will discuss online measurement of viscosity, melt index or IV and how these techniques can be used to provide insight into additive concentrations.

Focused on failures Michael F. Drenski, Co-founder & CTO of Advanced Polymer Monitoring Technologies opens the second day of the conference with an examination of monitoring and characterising of polymer degradation using simultaneous multiple sample light scattering. Then Dr Richard Padbury, Senior Consultant from Lucideon, will discuss the many multifaceted mechanisms, issues and causes surrounding polymer product failures. And Bill Tobin, Senior Weathering and Corrosion Technical Marketing Specialist at Q-Lab Corporation will detail the essentials of laboratory-based and accelerated weathering. Dr Liang Fang, Principle Research Scientist at West

Pharmaceutical Services, will start the second session with a perspective on the prediction of barrier proper- ties of fluoropolymer films and use as a research tool. This will be followed with a presentation from Dr John Zielinski, Lead Research Engineer at Intertek Chemi- cals and Pharmaceuticals, who will focus on the evaluation of barrier properties of membranes via permeation and sorption testing. Lucas Dillingham, Sales Engineer at BTG Labs, will speak in the third session about what manufacturers need to measure when controlling surfaces for adhesion. And Dr B Andre Weinstock, Principal Scientist at Teleflex, will discuss- es a simple ATR-FTIR method for assessment of grafted-polymer-thin-film quantification and qualification.

Dealing with sustainability The final session of the conference showcases some developments in the area of sustainability. Dr James Woods, Senior Research Scientist at Jordi Labs will deliver a presentation on continuous flow extraction and analysis of a single use bioprocess system. And the conference will be Dr Jo Ann Ratto, Polymer Engineer at the US Army Natick Soldier Research Development and Engineering Center , who will present a processing and characterisation study of biobased polymer films with soy additives.
