Getting hitched: latest in joining technology

Joining sections of pipe together can happen in challeng- ing extremes of weather and environment – including, in one recent case, on land reclaimed from the sea. Ritmo of Italy recently won a contract to supply its

Delta 1600 HDR butt fusion welding machine for an infrastructure project in the Middle East. The machine was used to install a 4km pipeline for a

sewage treatment plant in Bahrain. Wabag of India – along with its partner, Belhasa Project – were the lead partners on the €85m project at Al Madina Al Shamaliya – a new town being developed in Bahrain on an ‘artificial island’.

The 1200mm diameter DN10 pipe will be used as a

long sea outfall, to discharge the treated water from the plant into the sea. Hydraulic clamps on the machine help to ensure that

it carries out the job more efficiently, as they can be opened and closed very quickly. When closed, they help to grip the pipe in place – ensuring a better join. Ritmo says that the machine can weld fittings such as

elbows, tees, branches and flange necks. It features an automatic detaching device for the heating plate, and a raised platform deck for monitoring the fusion process. On site, welds are certified by Ritmo’s datalogging capabilities, which record and monitor the Delta 1600’s

advanced testing regimes are helping to reduce the risk of welding and joining contributing to pipe failure. Lou Reade reports

workflow. The device relies on an internal memory of 1,000 cycles, and includes a GPS system.

Expanded inspection TWI of the UK has joined forces with US-based Team Qualspec – a specialist in the maintenance, inspection and construction of mechanical and piping systems – to offer its PolyTest service to the North American market. PolyTest is a field inspection system specifically designed for volumetric non-destructive testing of butt fusion and electrofusion joints in polyethylene (PE) pipes. It has been used in a range of pipeline industries since being developed by TWI in collaboration with Nysearch, part of the Northeast Gas Association.
