MEASUREMENT | COLOUR

combination of human intelligence with machine learning will enable development of successful recipes with fewer iterations, ultimately leading to shorter product development timelines. Colour, which is so often critical to brand

recognition and aesthetic appeal, is critical in developing a commanding competitive position and this colour advantage starts with compound- ing, according to Equitech International. The company sees colour measurement transitioning from a manual operation to a fully automatic one. “This is a process that started over ten years ago

and is not there yet,” says Jaime Gomez, President and Chief Executive Officer. “Colour measurement has been around since 1931 when the International Commission on Illumination (CIE) published the 1931 XYZ colour space. Since then, colour measure- ment has primarily depended on the development of other technologies, such as illumination, diode arrays, CCDs, computing capacity, software advanc- es and electronics. Unfortunately, the rapid advanc- es in these technologies, particularly during the past ten years, have created a chasm between new technology and its adoption. This phenomenon is particularly acute in manufacturing, where the adoption of new technology moves much slower.”

Investment economics Gomez says plastics compounders are no excep- tion, typically using equipment that has been around for a few generations, and, in most cases, it is not amenable to upgrades or updates to modern technology. “There is an economic reason for this. The cost of manufacturing and ancillary equipment may be high for the compounder’s expected return-on-investment when compounding certain low-price resins. This factor changes drastically
