I rarely visit farms where the storage facilities of supplements or spawn are in a dramatic condition. Most growers naturally pay a lot of attention to hygiene, also when pallets are unloaded and moved to the storage area. Recently I was on a farm where I saw the situation shown in the photo. There were holes in some of the bags, where green mould had even started to grow on the supplement.
Every good grower knows that green mould growing on the packaging of supplement or spawn is not only a no-go, but also extremely dangerous because it will spread infection when it is mixed into the compost. And in this storage area, the floor was not clean, let alone disinfected. You can usually as-sume that supplements and spawn from professional suppliers are delivered in a clean and uninfected state. It is still a good idea to always check by measuring with agar dishes.
After all, an accident - for example a pallet truck or forklift accidentally knocking against the bags - can always happen. I advised the manager on this farm to use the damaged bags of supplement as soon as possible if they weren’t already infected. A better course of action is to dispose of the dama- ged bags in a bin bag. I told him that not just mushroom mycelium will flou- rish on the supplement, but it is also an ideal nutrient source for green mould. Rodents will also quickly sniff out the product if bags are torn or the bags are left open. This lesson served as a wake up call to pay extra attention to the conditions during the storage of sensitive raw materials. Which is never a bad idea!
