While I was reading the article about bacterial blotch (page 8), my thoughts returned to the past year. As with a fine flush of mushrooms without any strange blotches, spores or damage, all you want is good quality and production for a fair price. And that is exactly the same in our private lives, you simply want to get about your daily business, with the prospect of some fun and enjoyment on the horizon. Always challenging under normal circumstances, but in 2020 it wasn’t just an occasional outbreak of ‘blotch’ that was the problem – this year was more like an inky black stain that kept on spreading. You don’t want tunnels full of green mould infections, blind drunk pickers and a devastating fire on your farm. And no one wants, respectively, a global pandemic, a total lack of US leadership and the catastrophic bushfires that raged in Aus- tralia and California. Not to mention the spectre of Brexit, a self inflicted outbreak of ‘bacterial blotch’ the likes of which have never been seen before. Was there no way we could have called a halt to all this crazy stuff? In part, perhaps. As Mark den Ouden says in his article; once you notice the problem, it’s already too late! But, don’t let’s end the year completely shrouded in doom and gloom. There is some light at the end of the tunnel. The final Brexit disagreements will hopefully (finally?) be smoothed out and resolved within a few weeks, the results of the elections in the USA have been accepted (haven’t they?), and the Covid-19 vaccines are chilled and waiting to be injected. And if we take a closer look at our own sector, then – despite the pandemic – it has proven to be remarkably resilient. Sales didn’t collapse, head fillers kept rolling off the production lines, and consumers seem to have developed a new mushroom ‘awareness’, undoub- tedly driven by being forced to experiment at home with all kinds of delicacies during the lock- down. Two books have recently been published for the general public which focus on the positive properties of our product. That mushrooms are the future can’t be proclaimed often enough! And it is not our sector that’s causing Q-fever, or SARS. Or Coronavirus. So, mushroom friends, keep up the good work, and I wish you great days ahead. 2021 is going to be great!
