CULTIVATIONTIPS FUNGIPOINT Mechanical dehumidification

Evaporation is one of the most important parameters that affects growth and quality in mushroom cultivation. To clarify this, as a general rule of thumb, during the production of one kilo of mushrooms, about one litre of water will evaporate. This moisture has to be removed via the growing room air. For example, with a growing surface area of 965 m2 production of 30 kg/m2, 965*30= 28,950 litres or almost 29 m3

and of water

will have to be extracted via the air in growing room during the total cropping cycle.

This water vapour is extracted based on an RH (or moisture deficit) control. If the outside air is suitable for drying, the CO2

content can be

decreased so that more outside air is introduced into the growing room as a way of reducing the RH. If the outside air on its own is insufficient to reduce the RH, mechanical dehumidification will also be activated. However, if the outside air is not suitable for drying, the CO2

content

can be increased to reduce the amount of outside air and mechanical dehumidification will also be activated.

Principle mechanical dehumidification.

Mechanical dehumidification is a functionality whereby the cooling and heating are controlled in succession. If the RH in the growing room is too high and the outside air is not suitable (or not suitable enough) for drying, mechanical dehumidification will be activated. The cooling will start to open first. As the moist air passes through the cooling coil, the water vapour in the air will condense on the cold surface of the cooling coil. The condensed water is then drained. As the air is usually too cold after this cooling effect, the heating is activated to warm the air. As the air is war- med again, the RH decreases, so that dry air with the correct temperature is supplied to the growing room. To understand the effect of mechanical dehumidification, you can compare it to squeezing a sponge. First of all, the air is cooled (sponge is squeezed) then the air is heated again (release the sponge). The dry air can now start to absorb water vapour again. Conclusion: mechanical dehumidification only functions if there is sufficient capacity to cool and heat (reheat) the air. This also applies in countries with a mainly cold or hot climate!
