negate your relevance as a consultant.” Jos has been a long-term contributor to the trade publications of Global Roel Media (and prior to that Reed Business).
‘I’m proud to be
able to share my knowledge
regularly in Mushroom Business’
“When I started working at Cpoint, writing for trade journals became an automatic part of the job, and I am proud to be able to share my knowledge regularly in Mushroom Business. But, it goes without saying that writing is different to giving ‘live’ advice, it is not a ‘replacement of’. When you read an article, you can’t tangibly feel how compact the casing soil is, or smell the compost, but I always try to write my articles with the most practical focus possible, to inspire and inform growers and composters with expertise they can use in their own daily practice.”
Shepherds in the snow
As an international consultant, I am still regu- larly surprised, not just professionally but also by cultural differences. “During my time at Cpoint I gave many international training courses, including in Ethiopia to a group of very poor people. Two of them, supported by aid development funding, travelled to the Netherlands for a course. On the day we collected them from Schiphol airport it was freezing minus 10 degrees and we were wearing thick winter coats. However, the two students wandered through customs wearing their shepherd’s clothes and open sandals. They had never seen or felt ice and snow before! They were also amazed that dog food was on sale in a garden centre (while in their country people

were dying of starvation!) and that birds were kept in cages. At the end of their stay here, which couldn’t have been anything less than a total culture shock, they returned home laden with clothing and gifts from the Netherlands.”
