ISMSNEWS ISMS 2021 online - NAMC postponed T
he 20th ISMS Congress scheduled for Vancouver, 30 May-3 June next year, has been cancelled due to the Covid-19 global pandemic.
Instead, ISMS will be running a virtual event, ISMS e-Congress 2021, online from Tuesday 14 September to Friday 17 September, 2021. The congress will run for 2-3 hours per day to maximise the number of people around the globe who can participate live in the event. Recordings of the presentations will posted to the ISMS website after the Congress, with access for people who register for the Congress. According to ISMS President Greg Seymour, “Audiences can expect a stimulating mix of invited keynote addresses supported by short presentations of scientific papers accepted by the scientific committee. There will also be a few surprise online social events. The virtual format will provide many researchers who would not be able to travel to Vancouver with an opportunity to showcase their work to a large engaged global audience.” The closing date for the submission of abstracts for the e-Congress is now 28 February 2021. Submissions should be emailed to

NAMC postponed until ‘22
The 26th North American Mushroom Conference, which was organised to coincide with the 20th ISMS Conference in Vancouver, has been postponed until 2022.
In light of the current global pandemic and ongoing group gathering and travel restrictions, Mushrooms Canada and its North American Mushroom Conference partners have made the decision to postpone the event until 2022. The organisers thank ‘all those who have shown their continued support for the conference during this time. More details will be shared in the coming months and we hope to see you all again soon!’
If you have already signed up to be a Sponsor or Exhibitor to the 26th NAMC, you will be contacted shortly by the Mushrooms Canada office. The NAMC website will be updated soon.
CULTIVATIONTIPS ADVISIE Removing clusters early
In recent months, more clusters and abnormal mushrooms have been seen, in both one white and one brown variety. When many clusters occur, this is usually traced to one particular batch. There may be multiple causes, but for the compost supplier and grower it is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause. Neither have any insight into the spawn production process and the inspection facility. Most spawn producers have strict inspection procedures, but things can still go wrong sometimes. What used to happen was that when demand for a particular variety increased sharply, the first complaints about malformed mushrooms, clusters or open veil soon followed.
Spawn is only a small component of the cost price of compost but can have a significant impact on the final production capacity of the compost and the quality of the mushrooms it produces.
When you notice abnormalities, it’s vital to inform the compost supplier and the spawn supplier, so they can investigate and take the necessary measures in time. If you observe clusters, remove them from the bed as quickly as possible otherwise fewer mushrooms will grow around the cluster. Clusters need extra labour to remove them as well as affecting the picking performance, production and the percentage of quality I mushrooms.
