It is often commonly assumed that green mould infection originates in the compost. However, this assumption can sometimes be completely wrong, so it is always important to investigate the origin of the problem. A green mould infection may well originate in the compost, for a variety of reasons. For example, mistakes in the composting process at many levels can cause trichoderma infections, or also poor hygiene, especially in tunnel companies.
But the infection can equally originate in the casing soil, occur when the growing room is filled and/or at casing on farms that use phase II compost. It is vital to ensure the farm is spotlessly clean - and not just at filling. The accompanying photo - which was taken at a client’s premises- shows how crucial it is to investigate if the infection originates from the compost, of if only the casing soil is infected. This particular farm recognises the extreme important of proceeding with caution to ensure the infection is not spread unnecessarily. They also use agar plates to measure the air at different times during filling/casing for the presence of possible infections in each growing room. Agar plates are also pressed against compost, casing soil and any sup- plement used at different times during filling/casing. The plates are examined after a few days to see if there are any signs of trichoderma growing on the agar.
They take great care to perform these measurements hygienically using the right agar as green mould does not grow on all types of agar. The correct agar plates can be ordered from most professional spawn suppliers.
