44 TILTING AT DECKERS
100 issues and counting! A milestone, that we planned to mark with a big celebration. But while preparing this edition it became increasingly evi- dent that the crisis caused by coronavirus would also have a far-reaching impact on our readers. I witnessed the spectre of mushrooms being dispo- sed of, dumped, or just given away. Some compa- nies came to an abrupt halt, others are struggling to survive. In these circumstances, it is more appropriate to tone down the celebrations and instead devote space in this edition to how busi- nesses in the mushroom sector have been dealing with the crisis. How resourcefulness and creativity have been put to work to limit the damage. How you can continue to guarantee ‘continuity’ (diffi- cult) and ‘quality’ (naturally) during the pandemic. These two words also represent part of the secret of Mushroom Business, a trade journal which stands in a long tradition. Some regular authors such as John and Jos already contributed to the mushroom section of its predecessor in the Dutch ‘Groenten en Fruit’ magazine, and companies like Christiaens were already advertisers, years before I started ‘Paddestoelen’ in 2001. And since then, our publications, and me personally as editor-in-chief/ publisher, have been privileged to receive the con- tinued support of our contributors, readers and advertisers, even when I bought the titles from Reed Business in 2010. When I once asked Hubert Hay of advertiser Amycel what he would do if Reed did not want to sell the titles, and I would have to start up a competitor, he answered without hesi- tation: ‘Roel, we’re with you’. I have never forgot- ten his words. As a way of emphasising the strength of decades of reciprocal, and seldom mentioned loyalty, this edition features testimoni- als from some of the companies that have worked with us since the very beginning to continue provi- ding you with the best possible informative and editorial content. Such genuine expressions of warmth and appreciation are humbling, and reading them, I feel very lucky. The current corona crisis will end, and it seems, in comparison to other sectors, that ours has the will and resilience to endure, to continue. As Sylvan’s Iwan Brandsma recently said: ‘It hurts, but it won’t destroy us. So, could luck also be on the side of the mushroom sector for once?!’ Let’s have a drink to that, when we can meet again!
