PotatoEurope: the place to be for anyone in the potato sector

E BY RENÉ KOERHUIS

very year in September, potato pro- fessionals gather for the PotatoEurope exhibition, the outdoor event that al- ternates between four out of five EU-5

potato producing European countries. This year, it takes place in the Southwest of Bel- gium near Doornik/Tournai. Close to the E42/ E429 highway crossing and close to the bor- der with France. PotatoEurope 2019 is organised by Fedagrim, the Belgian Federation for machine suppliers, buildings and equipment for agriculture and landscaping. A collaboration between CARAH, PCA and FIWAP is responsible for supervising the growing programme and the field trials. The organisations ILVO and CRA-W are work- ing on the practical aspects of the machine demos. Visitors will have the chance to meet 220 ex- hibitors and that is quite a bit more than Bel- gium’s previous edition (193 in 2015). There’s a nice split between indoor (105 in the main tent) and outdoor (115) exhibitors who come

from 17 different European and Asian coun- tries. They will be exhibiting the latest techno- logical developments, a wide range of varie- ties, and their extensive knowledge of all aspects of potato growing and processing.

Demonstrations This year’s potatoes, supplied by Agrico (Fon- tane) and HZPC (Challenger), will be harvested by 14 harvesters from 6 companies. AVR, Dewulf, Grimme, Ploeger, Pouchain and Ropa will be showing both self-propelled as well as trailed harvesters and most working widths will be demonstrated: from 4-rows to 1-row harvesters that will be grouped and demon- strated according to the type. Five storage and sorting line-ups from AVR, Bijlsma-Hercules,

Dewulf-Miedema, Dubrulle-Downs and Grimme will be permanently on show and demonstrating their capabilities. Apart from the harvesters and storage lines, there are also static demonstrations of transfer transport trailers. The field cleaning aspect in particular is gaining more and more interest: processors do not want any tare after all, and are approaching their suppliers with this in mind. This year, eight companies will be showing their varieties and results on trial fields. These trial fields are in a central location so you as a visitor can easily find them. Alongside the tests on different varieties the trials will primarily cover crop protection and fertilisation. The total exhibition site covers 33.5 hectares with 4.8 hectares for stands, 27 hectares of demo areas for potato harvesters and storage lines and 0,8 hectares demo fields.

Machine and in particular harvester demonstrations always draw a huge crowd at Potato- Europe. AVR, Dewulf, Grimme, Ploeger, Pouchain and Ropa will be showing their harvesters.
