Safety first


eed safety is a precondition for safe human and animal health and it is often associated with preventing contamination of feed products. However, in this edition we look more broadly at the production of safe feed, in which the safety of people working at the feed mill or on the farm plays an important role. Various hazards arise during the production and storage of feed, when people are working with ad-


vanced machinery in dusty conditions and with chemical products. It is of course important that we consider the safety of the end product, but human safety during the production process is also important. And, at a time when we’re all engaged with our own safety, in the light of the corona pandemic, let’s share some thoughts on this topic and in particular feed safety standards. As one example, the International Organization for Stand- ardization (ISO) currently has an international standard under development regarding the use of station- ary feed machinery. On page 14 you can read about the safety requirements which ISO is proposing. On page 10, hazardous substances in the form of dust is discussed. Here we learn how to protect workers from hazardous minerals. And hazards outside the feed plant are also evaluated. On page 8 there is an overview of risks related to the production and storage of silage.
